Live updates on the shape of the playoff field – Shaw Local

Watch as this weekend's results shape and then reshape the field of 256 teams qualifying for the IHSA playoffs.

Thursday updates

9:07 p.m.: Illini West defeats Tuscola 12-7. Both teams started the game with a score of 5:3 and were already fairly solid in the field. But the forecast had reversed the outcome of the game, resulting in an improvement in the Illini West's ranking in the Class 2A field and a loss of Tuscola's ranking in Class 1A.

10:32 p.m.: There were two Week 9 CPL games that effectively served as play-in games for the IHSA playoffs. The forecast correctly predicted only one of those two games, with Clemente's win over Phoenix leading to changes in Class 3A and Class 4A. Clemente is a scheduled 4A school, so room had to be made for them in the draw, which caused South Shore to be demoted to Class 3A to take the place of projected winner Phoenix. The seed stacks have changed in both 3A North and 4A North. Point of order: Despite five wins this season, the losers of these two games (Noble/Comer and Phoenix) are not eligible for the IHSA playoffs.

Friday updates

7:28 p.m.: King's surprising decision to waive Goode on Friday afternoon sent something of a shockwave across the field. King entered the game 6-2 and Goode 4-4, reversing the prediction and putting Goode at the 5-win plateau.

That meant a spot had to be created for Goode in the field (in the Class 5A field) while Glenbard West was moved out of the field bubble to No. 257. Goode's addition to the 5A field moved Dunlap to 6A and Willowbrook to 7A.

Another CPL postponement resulted from the first final of the day. Amundsen defeated Lane to pick up his fifth win. Lane was the only 3-5 team scheduled to beat a 4-4 team this week, which also caused another postponement.

Lane was removed from the scheduled 8A field, with Edwardsville moving to the 8A field to fill that vacancy, while Guilford moved to the 7A field and placed Amundsen in 6A.

These events resulted in some group changes, either in the seeded players and/or in the teams in the field for 3A, 5A, 6A, 7A and 8A.

2:31 a.m.: We entered Friday confident that four four-win teams would need to be added to the field to fill the 256-player field.

But over the course of the evening, six 4-4 teams (Prairie Central, Chicago Goode, Genoa-Kingston, Collinsville, Marengo and Clifton Central) earned victories on the field, except Goode, which earned a forfeit victory by defeating opponents that had set a record that was better than 4-4.

Conversely, three 4-4 teams (Plainfield North, Homewood-Flossmoor and Wheaton North) all lost to teams with records worse than 4-4.

Since three spots in the field needed to be created after these two groups were taken into account, the list of teams with 4 wins to fill the field was reduced to just one.

But of course that has a variable. The team at the top of the list of teams that could finish 4-5 is Kenwood. But Kenwood needs to beat Phillips on Saturday to claim his fourth victory. If they don't win, Plainfield North moves to the top of this bracket and would secure the 256th spot.

Three other 4-4 teams still need to secure their fifth win to qualify. 4-4 Marmion plays 1-7 Leo; 4-4 Westinghouse plays against 2-6 Clark, 4-4 Noble Bulls/Prep plays against 0-8 Hyde Park. If one of these 4-4 teams loses, another 4-5 teams must be placed on the field.
