Man Utd sends message to Raphael Varane after resignation

Manchester United have sent a heartfelt message to former defender Raphael Varane after he announced his retirement from football.

The 31-year-old announced his surprise decision to hang up his boots and end his successful career on Wednesday. Varane recently joined newly promoted Serie A side Como from United on a free transfer, but decided to cut that trip short after suffering another injury earlier in the season.

After leaving Real Madrid, he moved to Old Trafford in 2021 and helped United to their first major cup win in six years in 2023 when they lifted the Carabao Cup. He was also part of the side that lifted the FA Cup in 2024 after they beat local rivals Manchester City.

His three seasons with the Red Devils were interrupted by injuries, but the centre-back still managed to make a positive impression at the club.

“You have represented our colours with great success during your three seasons at Old Trafford,” United said in a tribute to the Frenchman. “We thank you for your humility, leadership and commitment. May these qualities serve you well in your next endeavour.”

“Once a Red, always a Red.”

Varane responded to the kind statement and posted a reply that read: “Special moments shared! Manchester is a second home for me and my family. See you all soon.”

His move from United to Como in July was exciting news for fans of the Italian underdogs. The defender signed a two-year deal that would see him play in Serie A under former Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas. The Spaniard was appointed head coach of Como after a successful season as assistant to Osian Roberts.

He made only one appearance for Como, where he played 23 minutes in the Coppa Italia duel against Sampdoria.
