Manchester City 2:1 Watford – Carabao Cup result from the Etihad Stadium: Jeremy Doku and Matheus Nunes send Pep Guardiola’s team into the fourth round.

MAN CITY SURVIVES LATE WATFORD LEAD TO REACH ROUND FOUR

Manchester City made it into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with a narrow 2-1 win against Championship club Watford at the Etihad Stadium.

Pep Guardiola made nine changes to the team that had drawn 2-2 with Premier League title rivals Arsenal just two days earlier, but this did little to change the team's progress despite a last-minute slip-up.

Jeremy Doku opened the scoring after just five minutes when he shot low into the far corner after the visitors had given the Citizens the ball in their own penalty area.

Matheus Nunes increased the lead to 2-0 before half-time when he scored his first goal for the club from 18 metres past a diving shot by Jonathan Bond.

Watford had their chances on the counterattack, with Kwadwo Baah unlucky to have a goal disallowed for a foul, while Vakoun Bayo fired a free kick wide of the near post.

City substitute Savinho saw a shot on goal cleared off the goal line after about an hour and hit the post as he made a solo run and shot.

The Hornets almost made it a final score when Tom Ince curled the ball into the net with four minutes left, but they were unable to equalise or pull off a possible surprise.

Next up, Man City returns to Premier League action at Newcastle on Saturday, while Watford host Sunderland in the Championship.
