MATCH PREVIEW: Inter Miami CF begins its 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs campaign against Atlanta United on Friday

Inter Miami CF will begin its third-ever playoff season this Friday, October 25, hosting Atlanta United FC to kick off the Audi 2024 MLS Cup best-of-3 series, marking the first home playoff game in club history becomes. The game at Chase Stadium is scheduled to begin at 8:30 p.m. ET.

MLS record points achieved on the final day of the 2024 regular season

Inter Miami staged a remarkable comeback, earning a historic 6-2 victory over the New England Revolution last Saturday night at Chase Stadium. The result on MLS Decision Day concluded the 2024 regular season and resulted in the team setting a new league single-season points record. With the win, Inter Miami reached 74 points, surpassing the previous mark of 73 points set by the New England Revolution in 2021.

The resounding triumph was led by a masterful performance from second-half substitute Messi, the icon of the game. Our captain scored a hat trick and provided an assist to make MLS history. With his trio of goals and one assist, he became only the fifth player in MLS history to have at least 36 goal contributions in a single season and the first player in league history to score three goals in a game as a substitute contributed an assist. With the hat trick, he also made club history by scoring 33 goals for Inter Miami, overtaking Leonardo Campana (32 goals) as the club's all-time top goalscorer.

A brace from star striker Luis Suárez and a goal from academy junior Benjamin Cremaschi rounded off the team's impressive win on the final day of the regular season.

With Messi and Suárez reaching the 20-goal mark in Saturday's win, Inter Miami also became the first club in MLS history to have two players each score at least 20 goals in a regular season.

Inter Miami's historic 2024 MLS regular season

Inter Miami (22W-4L-8D) hosts Atlanta, completing a historic 2024 MLS regular season, highlighted by winning the club's Supporter's Shield title and setting a new league single-season points record. Inter Miami finished the regular season with a best record of 74 points (eight points ahead of the second-place team) and led the league with a total of 78 goals (six more than the next team).

Messi and Suárez lead the team with 20 goals and finished the regular season tied for second place among the league's top scorers. Messi also leads the team in assists with 19, ranking second among top assist givers this MLS season.

Player records and milestones

Captain Messi and Campana are the two active top scorers in the club's history. Messi has scored 33 goals in all competitions (21 in MLS) and is the top scorer in club history, while Campana follows with 32 (28 in MLS). Messi (18 in MLS) is also the top assist provider in club history with 23 in all competitions, followed by versatile attacker Robert Taylor (15 in MLS) with 22 in all competitions.

Drake Callender and Taylor are the most capped players for Inter Miami with 112 and 108 respectively in all competitions. In terms of MLS appearances, Callender is at the top with 90 (one in the playoffs), while Taylor follows in second place with 88 (one in the playoffs). Additionally, Campana is the third most-capped player for Inter Miami with 98 across all competitions and is approaching the milestone of 100 appearances.

Inter Miami CF in the Audi 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs

Following Friday's game, game two of the best-of-3 series against Atlanta United is scheduled for Saturday, November 2, at 7 p.m. ET at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Should a third game be necessary to decide the series, Inter Miami will return to Chase Stadium to host the final on Saturday, November 9th at 8:00 p.m. ET.

MLS Cup Playoffs Experience

While it will be the first MLS Cup playoff game for star players Messi, Suárez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, Inter Miami is facing its third playoff season in club history and has championship experience in its squad.

Head coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino led Atlanta United to the 2018 MLS Cup title, with versatile midfielder Julian Gressel being part of the winning team. Gressel also won the MLS Cup in 2023 while playing for the Columbus Crew.

Additionally, goalkeeper Callender, defender Ryan Sailor Sailor and attacker Taylor were featured in the club's final MLS Cup playoff appearance of 2022.

Previously against Atlanta United

Inter Miami and Atlanta United will meet for the third time this MLS season and the 15th time in club history. Overall, the Herons have recorded five wins, five defeats and four draws in the previous meetings between the two teams.

Inter Miami will look to extend its positive record hosting Atlanta at Chase Stadium after recording four wins, one loss and two draws at its home stadium.

In their last game, Miami and Atlanta played to a hard-fought 2-2 draw at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on September 18th in the MLS regular season.

Scouting Atlanta United

Atlanta United will visit South Florida after defeating CF Montréal 5-4 on penalties in the Eastern Conference wild-card game on Tuesday following a 2-2 draw in regulation time. Overall, the Five Stripes posted 10 wins, 14 losses and 10 draws for a total of 40 points and advanced to the Wild Card match by securing ninth place in the Eastern Conference standings.

Midfielder Saba Lobjanidze leads the team in both goals and assists this MLS season and has nine and seven assists so far this season.
