Match updates, week 6 live score

play

No. 22 Louisville Football will look to bounce back after suffering its first loss of the season today against SMU.

The Cardinals and Mustangs haven't played each other in 40 years and have revived the matchup now that SMU is part of the ACC. U of L faces a Mustangs team that has outscored its last two opponents 108-58 and will look to go 2-0 in the conference for the second straight year.

Despite a loss at Notre Dame, Louisville was also a balanced team. The Cardinals are averaging 41.5 points while allowing just 16 points per game. If Louisville beats SMU, it would be the Cardinals' first win over the Mustangs in three meetings.

LJ Johnson Jr. scored on a 1-yard run shortly after official review nullified a fumble by Brashard Smith that was recovered by U of L inside its own 10.

Ja'Corey Brooks caught an 86-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Shough. SMU cornerback Jonathan McGill fell to the ground trying to block the throw, allowing Brooks to run the remaining 50 yards untouched.

Collin Rogers hit a 43-yard field goal as the Cards held them out of the end zone for the first time in the game after allowing the Mustangs to reach their 20 yards.

Running back Don Chaney Jr. scored with a 1-yard touchdown plunge on fourth-and-goal as Louisville opened the second half with an eight-play, 78-yard drive.

Collin Rogers hit a 55-yard field goal to cap the Mustangs' 37-yard scoring drive.

BRock Travelstead made his second field goal of the game, this time from 38 yards out. The Cards advanced to the SMU 23, but a sack prevented them from getting any closer to the end zone

Kevin Jennings stormed down the left side of the line and ran untouched on a third-and-2 for a 59-yard touchdown run.

Brock Travelstead hit a 46-yard field goal, making it four consecutive possessions that opened the game with a score.

The Mustangs hit another big pass on the first play of the drive with a 31-yard completion to tight end RJ Maryland. Backup quarterback Preston Stone replaced Jennings, who was injured on a 22-yard run, and threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Key'Shawn Smith.

The Cards answered SMU with a touchdown drive on their first possession. The decisive play was a 50-yard strike from quarterback Tyler Shough to Ahmari Huggins-Bruce. It set up a 6-yard scoring pass from Shough to Ja'Corey Brooks.

SMU made it look easy on its first drive as it combined up-tempo offense with big yards. Kevin Jennings' 33-yard pass to Roderick Daniels Jr. was the big play on the drive, helping set up Daniels' 5-yard touchdown run.

Quincy Riley is out for the second game in a row. He suffered an undisclosed injury against Georgia Tech and has not been back since the ACC opener.

Louisville will be without starting defender Dez Tell today against SMU. Tell, who stood on the sideline in street clothes, was sidelined last week's game against Notre Dame with a leg injury but said he was feeling better Monday.

Louisville will be without safety Devin Neal and wide receiver Jimmy Calloway against SMU. According to a team spokesman, Neal has left the team.

Louisville 45, SMU 31. The loss to Notre Dame, largely due to self-inflicted mistakes, will be the motivation the Cardinals need to get back on the winning side. While both defenses have been great this season, I can see this being a battle of strong offenses with the Cardinals having enough ammunition to emerge victorious.
