discussion

Locally windy ENE trade winds will continue tonight bringing only a few showers, mainly in windward areas. Winds will ease on Monday and remain light for the rest of the week. The light winds, together with a mountain ridge high up, ensure mostly dry weather. Long-term forecasts suggest a trend toward a wetter pattern could develop by next weekend.
A strengthening and locally breezy trade wind is supported by a ridge well north of the islands, with broad low pressure about 1,200 miles northwest of Kauai. A strong and low droop inversion is the result of a strong mid-high back centered directly over the head. The end result is a mostly dry trade wind regime, with radar and satellite randomly showing scattered, stable and rainy low clouds that bring little precipitation. Little change is expected by this evening.
The low northwest of the area will persist in one form or another for most of next week as another low develops well northeast of the islands. This will result in a significant reduction in the low pressure gradient, with light east-southeast winds expected throughout the week. The ridge remains overhead and it is likely that it will remain mostly dry. The best chance for a shower may be over leeward areas in the afternoon as sea breeze convergence drives cloud formation, with a small chance of windward showers overnight.
Although confidence is quite low due to the significant variations in forecasts, a slow low in the air could develop near the islands next weekend, potentially leading to a wetter regime.

aviation

Moderate to locally windy trade is expected for the remainder of today. Winds should ease on Monday and remain light for the rest of the week. SHRA and low cigs should favor windward and mauka locations. Short MVFR conditions are possible in SHRA, but VFR should prevail.
There are currently no AIRMETs in force.

marine

Moderate to locally strong easterly trade winds will continue throughout the day as upper elevation levels continue north of the islands. A Small Craft Advisory (SCA) is in effect until 6:00 p.m. today for the typically windier waters and channels around Maui County and the Big Island. Winds will gradually ease tonight into the early part of the week as two lows are forecast to form well to the northwest and northeast of the waters. The surface ridge will weaken, allowing light to moderate east-southeast trading to remain stable through Friday.
A small, short-term north-northwest swell will gradually ease by midweek and shift to a more northeasterly direction by Tuesday. Weak background energy from the northwest is expected throughout the week before a small to moderate mid-period northeast rise is forecast by the end of the week. On south-facing shores, there are southerly waves in the background that prevent the surf from becoming flat. A small, long-term strengthening is expected to arrive on Monday evening and diminish over the week, followed by another on Friday.
A Coastal Flooding Statement (CFWHFO) for all coastal areas highlights the fact that higher than forecast water levels are associated with full moon flooding, which may result in minor coastal flooding, particularly in the early hours into Monday morning.
