Daniil Medvedev will face Italian Matteo Arnaldi in the third round of the Shanghai Masters. Sunday's lineup also includes an all-French affair between Tokyo runner-up Ugo Humbert and veteran Gael Monfils.

(5) Daniil Medevedev vs. (29) Matteo Arnaldi

It hasn't been a good duel for Matteo Arnaldi so far. The 23-year-old Italian has defeated Daniil Medevedev three times and won a single set for his efforts. The good news is that his better result is also the last game; The bad news is that it took place on a clay court. Given that they play on Medvedev's preferred hard courts and given his strong performance in Beijing already during the Asian tournament, this could spell trouble for Arnaldi.

Medevedev had a surprisingly challenging second-round match against Thiago Seyboth Wild, a Brazilian ranked No. 88 in the world. Seyboth Wild didn't win a set, but he pushed the Russian to 7-5, 7-5. Still, it's hard to imagine Medvedev losing so early on his favorite surface. The match itself favors the world No. 5 and there is little sign of the end-of-season fatigue that sometimes plagues players at this time of year.

(16) Ugo Humbert versus Gael Monfils

Compatriots Ugo Humbert and Gael Monfils played twice at the start of this season and shared the victories. But it is Humbert who is having his breakout year. The friendly French player just reached the final in Tokyo, where he lost to his compatriot Arthur Fils in a hard-fought title fight (Humbert even had a championship point). Humbert's run came last week, so fatigue could become an issue for the world No. 15 as the tournament progresses.

Monfils has a mediocre record of 23-20 this season, including his two wins so far this week over Damir Dzumhur and Sebastian Baez. The popular veteran is clearly at the end of his career, although he still manages to wow tennis audiences around the world. In his best tournament of the year, he beat Humbert en route to the semifinals in Doha.

Make sure Humbert moves forward in this case. Monfils might actually make it more competitive than his No. 46 ranking suggests, but in the end, the left-hander is just playing better tennis at the moment.
