On Tuesday's “Only Murders in the Building,” the podcast protagonists were in motion, there was a fight between Meryl Streep and Melissa McCarthy's characters, for which the actresses gave up their stunt doubles, and even a marriage proposal. With so much going on, we pounce like Oliver (Martin Short) when he sees a dip!

To escape this season's killer and his prying hidden cameras, Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver and Mabel (Selena Gomez) escape the Arconia apartment building on the Upper West Side in the seventh episode (now streaming on Hulu). the way to Charles' estranged sister's house on Long Island.

Doreen (McCarthy) is an absolute sweetheart with her matte pixie hairstyle, hoop earrings and shimmery mauve lip gloss. She also gives new meaning to the term “all dolled up”: Her house is like a life-sized home for her extensive collection of dolls of all sizes – on the bookshelves, on the mantel, and even on the sofa next to her guests.

One in particular might catch the eye of Swifties, who were taught by Taylor Swift to hunt for Easter eggs. In one scene, Mabel shares a sofa with a blonde, life-size doll that resembles Swift and wears a jersey with the number 87, the number worn by Swift's friend Travis Kelce when setting records for the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs.

“It’s a complete coincidence,” Gomez said in an interview, adding that she didn’t notice the resemblance.

“I think the crew throws little surprises every now and then,” says Martin. (USA TODAY has reached out to Hulu for comment.)

The stars of the series were also surprised by another part of the episode: the violent fight between Doreen and Oliver's girlfriend Loretta (Streep). Loretta, who believes in a text message that Oliver has broken up with her, flies in from Los Angeles. Her presence angers Doreen, who has fallen a little in love with Oliver.

Doreen's jealousy erupts into an argument.

“Don’t tell me to calm down. Why don’t you go back to Beverly Hills?” Doreen demands and pushes Loretta.

“You have to get out of my house, you Hollywood tart,” she adds with another thrust that sends Loretta over the back of a sofa. Then Doreen hops onto the couch, grabs Loretta and puts one of her signature pigtails in her mouth.

“Why are you eating your pigtails?” Doreen asks as Loretta struggles to get free. Loretta worries about her pacemaker – a ploy to escape Doreen's influence.

“I played,” Loretta boasts, sending Doreen flying with a kick.

Loretta then climbs on top of her victim and begins whipping Doreen with a fake braid that Doreen wore to get Oliver's attention.

When Martin read the script for the episode, he predicted that it would be “an incredibly funny scene with Meryl Streep and Melissa McCarthy going at each other.” But he didn't know how game the actresses would be.

“We said, 'Let's rehearse it,' and these two, Melissa and Meryl, went to work alone, across the couches, doing everything themselves,” says Martin. “I was stunned! I have to say my mouth was buzzing!”

“They didn’t need the stunt doubles!” Gomez says. “They were great!”

“They just really went for it,” Martin adds, “and I thought it was going to be one of the funniest scenes ever.”

“I was there,” Short says. “But when I saw it all together, I was still amazed that it was clearly Meryl and Melissa who did this. It is very aggressive. Very funny.”

Tuesday's episode also has heart. Loretta finally proposes to Oliver after learning that he is thinking about getting engaged. “Despite your obvious pathologies, I am still here,” Loretta tells her love. “And I’m not going anywhere and signing up with you for life.”

She then reaches out and holds a beaded doll bracelet. “I’m proposing to you, Oliver,” she explains. “I want to marry you.”

“Now, before I accept out of curiosity, is there family money?” He jokes before agreeing and giving his bride-to-be a smooch.

Martin jokes that Short initially thought the engagement to Streep was “real.”

“I always said, ‘No, guys. “I know real,” Short says, playing along. He describes the script engagement as “delightful.”

“It made sense because at the end of season three you kind of felt like this couple wasn't finished and that they were going to move on,” says Short, “and the obvious next step was marriage.”
