Mets' Brandon Nimmo explains why he made fun of Phillies

PHILADELPHIA — When cameras caught Mets left fielder Brandon Nimmo chirping Phillies catcher JT Realmuto after his seventh-inning home run, viewers were surprised.

Nimmo is about as sane a man as the Midwest can produce. He doesn't curse, ends his answers with a polite “sir” or “ma'am” and steps to the plate to gospel music. So the idea that the Cheyenne, Wyoming native was engaging in any trash talk in Game 2 of the NL Division Series made no sense.

Even Realmuto couldn't believe it when it happened. He just stared at him in confusion.

“To be honest, I don’t know (what he said),” Realmuto said after the game. “He said something about (Cristopher) Sanchez. But I don't know what he said. I just nodded. …I didn't say a word. He mentioned Sánchez's name, but it was so loud in the stadium. I didn’t know what he said.”

After hitting a 390-foot throw from Phillies reliever Orion Kerkering, Nimmo, who usually keeps his head down and runs without fanfare, was shown saying something to Realmuto. In the bottom of the inning, the Phillies' catcher was hit by a pitch, further fueling fans that something strange was going on.

Nimmo wanted to clear the air after the Mets' 7-6 loss on Sunday.

“It had nothing to do with the home run,” a shy Nimmo said after the game. “I have the utmost respect for Realmuto, he is one of the most open-minded guys. It literally had nothing to do with the home run. That was completely misinterpreted.”

Maybe Nimmo was just happy to see Sánchez, the Phillies' starter, out of the game and that's why he mentioned his name. The left fielder went 1-3 with a soft single to third base against Sánchez.

It's anyone's guess.
