Miami, Indiana, Wisconsin are doing well

play

Report Card is back this week after a well-deserved break, and some teams need a break too (hello, friends in Norman and Lincoln).

But for other teams that would rather not pass the ball to their opponents or complete a pass when their lives depend on it, all is not lost as we near the release of the first College Football Playoff rankings.

The same applies to last season's grading: good grades are only given for spectacular things, and failing grades have no chance of being reversed.

Here's Week 8's analysis of how fans, teams, players and coaches fared:

Wisconsin strength coach Brady Collins…brave soul

There's something special about keeping your word, especially when it involves braving the frigid temperatures for no other reason than to inspire a football team.

Collins did just that when he said he would jump into Lake Michigan if the Badgers beat Northwestern.

After Wisconsin defeated the Wildcats 23-3, Collins went ahead and plunged into the freezing lake as the team cheered him on. After splashing around in complete excitement for a few seconds, Collins had the good sense to get out of the lake.

Any coaches making similar promises to jump into the lake will have to wait until next year, as that year was Northwestern's last appearance in the temporary stadium. The new Ryan Field is expected to be ready in time for the 2026 season.

“Their entire network doubted us, and the refs tried to rob us with calls at that point,” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said via ESPN and the media when a crucial pass interference call against Texas was called after a timeout due to Throwing fans picked up trash on the field.

“Let me just tell you this so everyone hears me clearly,” Maryland coach Mike Locksley told The Washington Post about the recent wave of gun-brandishing celebrations around college football. “I had a son who was murdered with a gun. Standing up, pointing a gun and acting like you’re shooting a gun or having a gun is not funny to me or my family.”

“And if you want to make a show of making a grand entrance, then this program is probably not the one you should be in.”

“I don’t want to bring anything personal into this because Louisville is a great city, I love the people, but Miami is going to smoke them,” senior golfer Scottie Scheffler and College GameDay guest player said Saturday. Scheffler was arrested by Louisville police officers following a traffic violation in May before the second round of the PGA Championship.

“Our kicking game is terrible. So if you can kick and play at Arizona State, send me an email, right? We will have kicking tryouts on Monday so join us. Kicking tryouts on Monday, here we go,” said Sun Devils head coach Kenny Dillingham. “Yes, I am absolutely serious. We will publish it on our social networks, we will have a great tryout on Monday. We have to find someone who can make a field goal.”

Arizona State kickers have made 7 of 13 field goals in 2024, including two misses (from 48 and 41 yards) on Saturday in a 24-14 loss to Cincinnati. Dillingham later apologized for his comments.

Statistics for you

0: Points allowed by Indiana in the first quarter.

7: Opening touchdowns for Army in seven games this season

9: No. 1 vs. No. 2 regular season games all-time in FCS history. No. 2 leads No. 1 6-3 after second-seeded North Dakota State defeated South Dakota State 13-9 on Saturday.

22: Prior to Friday night's 23-16 win over the Seminoles, Duke had lost consecutive games to Florida State.

620: Passing yards for Western Carolina (FCS) quarterback Cole Gonzales. Gonzales completed 35 of 55 passes and threw five touchdowns in a 52-20 win over Furman.

The dog of the week

Nebraska near Indiana

Now to the game:

The Pups had a rare chance to see two Power Four teams with winning records, with the winner having a chance to make a mark in the national championship. As with most games that end in this area, one team decided they couldn't be bothered to compete and the other had better things to do the rest of the day, so they decided to make quick work of their opponents.

Nebraska has serious wounds to lick after a 56-7 loss as the Hoosiers sold out Memorial Stadium for the first time in three years. Five turnovers by a team will certainly result in a number other than zero in the loss column, and it led to Indiana posting its most lopsided conference win in history and giving the dogs a fun afternoon filled with treats and belly rubs.
