Mike Macdonald and Pete Carroll were involved in the most useless viral video of all time

When Pete Carroll was effectively fired as head coach of the Seattle Seahawks, the organization had to do something with him. He had one year left on his contract and received a guaranteed salary of at least $10 million. Plus, he had been with the team for so long that it would have looked bad to publicly sideline Carroll completely.

Seattle named Carroll an “advisor,” but he serves in that role in name only. He has nothing to do with managing the team, assembling the squad or making decisions on the field. In fact, to help first-year head coach Mike Macdonald, the team hired veteran coach Leslie Frazier even though Carroll was still with the organization.

Macdonald started out okay by winning its first three games, but the defense has been atrocious lately and Seattle has lost three games in a row. Some 12-year-olds on social media wish Carroll was back as head coach. But let's be honest. The same problems the Seahawks have now on defense are the same ones they had under Carroll. The team wouldn't be doing any better with the former coach.

But to be clear. Carroll does not advise Macdonald. The problem is that some fans may be misinterpreting a video posted on X/Twitter of Carroll and Macdonald chatting the day after Seattle's loss to the San Francisco 49ers last week.

The meeting between the two seems to have probably taken place by chance. Both attended an NBA exhibition game at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle. In the video you can see both of them talking to General Manager John Schneider and then taking a few photos together. Most likely that was all there was to the meeting.

If Macdonald were with the Seahawks a year or two into his coaching career, or if the team wasn't on a losing streak, few would notice the video. Instead, Macdonald appears to need some help in correcting the team's direction, and Carroll could help with that. However, he isn't. Leslie Frazier and others would be.

Still, the viral video is at least pleasing. Everyone is smiling and Carroll doesn't have such a big ego that he would turn down the opportunity to chat with Macdonald. The same goes for Macdonald versus Carroll.
