MLB playoff results, live updates: Mets overtake Phillies, Dodgers face Padres in NLDS Game 3

Tuesday belongs to the NL, with Game 3 in each of the National League Division Series.

The Mets defeated the Phillies in New York in the early game before the highly anticipated Southern California matchup between the Dodgers and Padres in San Diego.

The New York Mets are one win away from the NLCS.

Sean Manaea pitched seven one-run innings and the Mets capitalized twice with two outs and the bases loaded to secure a 7-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday. With the win, the Mets took a 2-1 lead in the NLDS and have a chance to close out the series at home on Wednesday.

The win continues a remarkable run for a Mets team that appeared to be out of the playoff race midway through the season and needed a win on the final day of the regular season to secure its spot in the playoffs.

The Phillies now need to pick up two straight wins to avoid further playoff disappointment in a postseason that many believed was theirs.

In the second game, Walker Buehler took the mound for the Dodgers against Michael King for the Padres. King was thoroughly dominant in his first start of the 2024 postseason, pitching seven shutout innings and striking out 12 Atlanta Braves in Game 1 of the Wild Card Series. In 15 career postseason starts, Buehler has a 2.94 ERA and the Dodgers are 9-5 in those games.

The Padres cruised to a 10-2 win in Game 2 of this NLDS behind a pair of home runs from Fernando Tatis Jr., and the series only gets more exciting as we head to San Diego.

Here's a look at Tuesday's NLDS action:

Live38 updates

  • There's a lot of drama surrounding Game 3 in San Diego, much of it focused on Manny Machado throwing a ball toward the Dodgers' dugout in Game 2. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was critical of Machado on Monday. He softened his stance in a pregame interview with Fox Sports on Tuesday, hours after Padres manager Mike Schildt made his case for Machado.

Here's Roberts to Fox Sports ahead of Game 3 when asked about the seriousness of Machado's throw:

“Not very serious,” Roberts said. “I really don't think he was trying to hurt anyone.” I feel like there's a lot behind that throw when you want to throw the ball toward the dugout.

“Like I said, I trained Manny. We have a good relationship. He is an ultimate competitor. Just like us. My boys and I are focused on today. What happened, happened.”

Here is the litter in question:

  • Padres starters with Michael King on the mound:

  • For your nightcap, here are your Dodgers appetizers. Freddie Freeman is back and Walker Buehler will take the mound.

  • Mets win and take 2-1 series lead over Phillies

That's the game. The Phillies fail to score in the ninth and the New York Mets are one win away from the NLCS.

Sean Manaea pitched seven one-run innings, and the Mets capitalized twice with two outs and the bases loaded to secure a 7-2 win. With the win, the Mets take a 2-1 lead in the NLDS and have a chance to close out the series at home on Wednesday.

Manaea had one of the best games of his career, allowing three hits and two walks with six strikeouts in seven innings. He left the game in the top of the eighth with the shutout intact, but left a baserunner on first to come over to score. Doesn't matter. He took the win after an outstanding performance.

Pete Alonso and Jesse Winkler each hit solo home runs, while Mark Vientos and Jose Iglesias each had two RBI.

  • The Mets leave the Round of 16 with a 7-2 lead and the Phillies need a three-out miracle to work with.

  • There's more insurance for the Mets. Francisco Lindor hit an RBI double to extend New York's lead to 7-2 at the end of the eighth quarter. New York has runners on second and third with two outs.

  • Nick Castellanos adds another Phillies run with an RBI single to left field. The top of the eighth quarter ends with Alec Bohm lineout to midfield.

Philadelphia cuts New York's lead to 6-2, but still has a lot of work to do with three outs remaining.

  • The Phillies are on the board. Bryce Harper delivered a single to right field with two outs and two on in the seventh inning. The RBI single cuts New York's lead to 6-1 and leaves the bases loaded.

  • Sean Manaea allows a leadoff infield single to Edmundo Sosa and his day is over. After seven strong innings, he receives a well-deserved ovation from the crowd at Citi Field.

  • Mets starter Sean Manaea is out again in the eighth inning with a 6-0 lead. He had 87 to seven pitches.

  • Disaster for the Phillies. Jose Iglesias struck out Jose Ruiz with the bases loaded to score two more runs. Pets Alonso was thrown out at home after unsuccessfully trying to score a third run. But the damage is done.

New York extends its lead to 6-0 after seven innings.

  • Jose Ruiz will allow the Phillies to reach the final out in the seventh with the bases loaded.

  • Phillies reliever Jose Alvarado gets two outs but runs the bases from there in the seventh. He's finished.

  • Sean Manaea continues to act. He left the Phillies team after seven pitches in the seventh, including an inning-ending strikeout against Austin Hays. The Mets lead 4-0 in the seventh inning.

Manaea has allowed two hits and walked two in seven shutout innings with six strikeouts. It has 87 pitches. Will he come back for the eighth time?

  • New York starter Sean Manaea is out again in the seventh inning with the Mets leading 4-0.

  • The Mets add. Phillies reliever Orion Kerkering gets two outs after recovering a bases-loaded jam. But Starling Marte comes through for the Mets with a two-out line drive single that scores two runs.

The Mets doubled their lead to 4-0 before Kerkering got out of the sixth without further damage.

  • Orion Kerkering gets the call from the Phillies bullpen. In the sixth, the bases are loaded with no outs. Mets lead 2-0 and have a chance to open the game.

  • Aaron Nola's day is over. He loaded the bases with a walk from Pete Alonso with the score 3-2. The Phillies bullpen will inherit a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the sixth.

  • What an innings from Sean Manaea. He shows his first signs of wear with back-to-back walks, putting two men on deck with no outs in the sixth and the heart of the Phillies' order.

He responded by swinging at Bryce Harper and setting up a double play by Nick Castellanos to end the inning and keep the Phillies off the scoreboard.

The Mets lead 2-0 at the end of the sixth quarter.

  • Aaron Nola with a big reaction after giving up a second home run in the fourth inning. He knocked the team out in the fifth round, capped by a spirited third goal from Francisco Lindor.

Aside from the two solo home runs he allowed, he now has eight strikeouts in a strong game.

The Mets lead 2-0 after five innings.
