“Montez Sweat reflects on being traded to the Bears before Commanders game.”

The Chicago Bears acquired star pass rusher Montez Sweat in a trade with the Washington Commanders almost a year ago, and his impact on this defense has been invaluable.

Sweat had a career year in 2023, where he totaled 12.5 sacks – both Chicago (6.0) and Washington (6.5) – and earned his first Pro Bowl nomination. But beyond the numbers, Sweat's presence had an impact on the players around him, and that's also the case this season with second-year defensive tackle Gervon Dexter.

With Sunday's game against the Commanders looming, Sweat reflected on being traded to the Bears and how important it was to his game.

“I'm happy just being where I'm wanted, in a place where they want me and I have a place,” Sweat said. “It’s just a good environment. You're with people you want to play for. You are close to coaches you want to play for. This makes you want to go hard. That adds a lot to your game.”

Sweat, hobbled by toe and ankle injuries, has recorded just 2.5 sacks in six games but remains an integral part of the pass rush's success.

“(Sweat) obviously had a big impact on our guys' mood, mentality and demeanor,” defensive line coach Travis Smith said. “Is it just him? No. But does he know how to slide? Does he command double teams? Does he open up other tackles for other guys? Yes, that's him. It works together.”

This week's game provides a little extra motivation as Sweat prepares to face his former team, just about a year after they traded him to Chicago. Sweat has been vocal about not feeling wanted and that there is a losing culture in this locker room, but he has found his home with the Bears. While Sweat always looks to dominate, he could have his best performance of the season this Sunday.

“I want to do damage every week,” Sweat said. “Perhaps, Perhaps a little more motivation this week. But it's just another week. I feel like we’re definitely on our way to a great D.”
