Montgomery police respond to shots fired during ASU's homecoming festivities

Montgomery police responded to multiple reports of shots fired at the tailgate area of the Alabama State University campus in the 1100 block of Carter Hill Road at 8 p.m. Saturday, but no injuries were reported.

The university hosted a two-day homecoming event Friday evening with a Sexxy Red concert. Both MPD and the Alabama State University Department of Public Safety received reports of multiple shots fired Saturday.

On Friday evening, sirens blared throughout the event as people crowded together and enjoyed their food. About 15 police vehicles lined Carter Hill Road around 9 p.m. An ambulance left the scene and at least one person reported hearing automatic gunfire.

On Saturday evening, officers responded to the scene and confirmed that an unknown number of people had fired shots into the air. Police reported no injuries or property damage following their response to the scene.

There was no active shooter on campus, said Ken Mullinax, ASU's public relations director. The ASU Department of Public Safety advised the ASU community to find a safe location for the remainder of the evening.

Mullinax said officers are “actively monitoring the area to ensure the safety of the campus community.” He promised to provide updates as more information becomes available and urged people on campus to “remain vigilant” and report suspicious activity to the ASU Department of Public Safety at 334-229-4400.
