Mumbai Hospital: Ratan Tata critical, in Mumbai Hospital ICU: Report

Ratan Tata, chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, is in a critical condition and was admitted to the intensive care unit of a hospital in Mumbai on Wednesday, Reuters reported, citing sources with direct knowledge of the matter.

The 86-year-old posted on social media on Monday that he was undergoing a routine check-up due to his age and related illnesses.

In a statement posted on his social media profiles, he said: Tata said he remained in good spirits and there was no reason to worry.

Ratan Tata's legacy

Tata became chairman of the group in 1991 and led the group founded by his great-grandfather more than a century ago until 2012. He founded the brand's telecommunications division called Tata Teleservices in 1996 and took the IT company Tata Consultancy Services public in 2004.He stepped down as chairman in 2012 but retained the honorary title of chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, Tata Industries, Tata Motors, Tata Steel and Tata Chemicals.

Tata still runs the Tata Trusts, which play a significant role in India's philanthropic landscape. Tata was honored with the Padma Bhushan in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008, two of India's highest civilian honors for his contribution to the industry.

He played an important role in setting up Apple iPhone manufacturing unit in India. Under his leadership, the Tata Group acquired a controlling stake in Wistron's iPhone assembly plant near Bengaluru in 2024. Through this acquisition, Tata Group became the first Indian company to assemble iPhones, marking a significant step in Apple's diversification of its manufacturing base.

In addition to his business legacy, he is also a major investor in many startups, supporting over 30 companies in various industries.
