BEREA, Ohio – Myles Garrett admitted Friday that he is having pain in both feet, not just one, and that it is likely related to the two foot surgeries he had as a young boy to correct flat feet.

He also acknowledged that the condition would likely affect him for the rest of his career and that further surgeries in the future could not be ruled out.

That's a lot for the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year and future Hall of Famer to process.

But Garrett has been dealing with it for 17 years, ever since he underwent the first of two corrective surgeries as a middle school student.

That's why he wants to avoid another operation altogether or delay it as long as possible: when he had the operations at the ages of 11 and 12, he was confined to the couch for six months each time.

Is surgery currently being considered?

“We've talked about it, but that's something we'll probably talk about later,” he said during his weekly availability Friday as the Browns prepare to face the Giants here on Sunday. “Hopefully we can deal with the pain and everything else and it goes away. But the issue itself is something I'm probably going to have to deal with no matter how long I play. So it's just a matter of dealing with it and playing through it.”

He acknowledged that the current problem, which involves pain and inflammation, is probably related to the two procedures he had on his child.

“Hmm, something like that,” he said. “Not exactly, but it probably has something to do with these events.”

In 2021, Garrett's mother Audrey revealed to cleveland.com that Garrett had two back-to-back surgeries, one at age 11 and one at age 12, and described how severe they were. They were discovered after his father Lawrence had back surgery and the surgeon told him it all started with his feet. They told him Myles had the same feet, and he urged them to admit him.

“His bones had collapsed,” Audrey said. “He had no arch, nothing. So they put arch supports in and severed a tendon in his back that was too tight.”

Garrett was mostly couch-bound for six months each time and couldn't even play basketball.

“Before those surgeries, Myles couldn't even dunk the ball,” Audrey said. “He couldn't jump at all. So when you see him do the standing jump (60-inch box), it's amazing because the kid couldn't jump until that surgery. That's when he started dunking the ball and became the exceptional athlete that is Myles Garrett.”

Garrett's feet already give an idea of ​​the path he has taken to become one of the NFL's most dominant pass rushers.

“If you ever watch him walk, you'll see that his left foot is kind of turned inward,” Audrey said. “He's always very slow when he walks. In fact, when you see him running and pushing off, his left foot is kind of turned inward.”

This week, Garrett rested on Wednesday and Thursday before returning to the field on a limited basis on Friday. It helped, but that's about the best he can hope for right now. The two days off per week may have to be his routine for a while.

“It's still there,” he said. “It still hurts. I'm just trying to manage it as best as I can, really try to control the inflammation and get the pain under control by Friday. And then I definitely need to get some reps in and some high-speed reps in with my legs, run a little bit so I don't have to worry about other things like soft tissue injuries, hamstrings or anything like that.”

“So I'm trying to really reduce the high-speed load until Friday and then see how it feels and how well I can ride. Feels good, get everything ready, let's go. But until then, we'll let it go.”

He noted that chasing Trevor Lawrence after his 33-yard run in last week's 18-13 win over the Jaguars didn't help him. After that play, he limped to the sideline and rubbed his feet. But he came back and finished drives, ever the gladiator on game day.

“Well, it was worse from the jump,” he said. “It didn't help to kind of chase him either. He's definitely not slow. I mean, my guy can move and it took me a little second to recover, but I got back out there and kept playing.”

He hopes it won't last the whole season, but doesn't promise anything.

“Hopefully it will continue to get better over the next few weeks until it doesn't bother me as much,” he said. “So I'm just trying to hang in there and handle things as they are now.”

He admitted that the sore feet could also have a good side, as they would force him to better refine his technique and intensity.

“I wouldn't say I get into a Mamba mentality,” he said. “I feel like I have that every time I step on the court. I don't think it's any different with the injury, but you focus on your technique and your fundamentals because you know it might be a little slower or the cut might not be quite as crisp or whatever.

“Knowing that you have to be a little bit better somewhere else to make up for the deficiencies. When I get there on Sunday, we'll see how big my deficiencies are, if they even exist. But that's something I have to be aware of and we'll take it into account.”

It also helps that defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz rotates as many as eight linemen each game. Against the Jaguars, Garrett played 41 snaps, or 68%. That was the most among defensive players, but just enough to last the rest of the way. He also had enough strength to sack Lawrence in the third quarter and record his second sack-fumble in as many weeks.

“That's true, and when I'm out there and I'm out there all the time, of course you get tired when you do one round after another,” Garrett said. “But the warmer I get and the more reps I get, the more comfortable it gets. And then when you sit for a little bit during those breaks, it kind of gets cold and things like that.”

But Schwartz knows that even 70% of Garrett is better than 100% of most players.

“It's no secret that we're dealing with a lot of injuries up front, (but) Myles is still Myles. He gets one-on-ones and he (gets) a sack strip. We're just in the process of getting him those one-on-one situations and finding the other complementary rushers. But he's battling.”

Like Lawrence, Giants quarterback Daniel Jones could also compete with Garrett with his excellent mobility and size.

“It's so problematic the way we do it,” Garrett said. “If we let him out of the pocket and we don't rush because we know what each other's chemistry is, then we're going to be chasing him all day. The guy can run, he's athletic, he's big, he's strong, so it's just about keeping him in check and protecting the pocket and chasing him but not allowing him to escape where he wants to.”

Garrett, who has moved around the line in the first two games, will also have a tough battle with Giants left tackle Andrew Thomas, who was selected No. 4 overall in 2020 and is a second-team All-Pro selection in 2022.

“I don't know if I can beat him,” Garrett said, smiling. “No, he's very talented. He's strong, he's on the tall side, he's got long arms and he's a good kicker. He doesn't let a lot of guys beat him at the rim and you have to have a little patience.”

“You've got to play the game a little bit and not get in his way. He's going to chain his sets, he's going to pull his hands back. He's a veteran pass blocker from being around for years and he's definitely worked on his skills going up against Kayvon (Thibodeaux) and those guys over there too. So it's going to be a challenge when we go up against him as an edge rusher and we're all looking forward to the challenge. He's one of the best.”

While he's dealing with his foot injury, he takes pride in helping his teammates make plays, like when he set up Alex Wright to assist Lawrence from the back of the end zone for the Jacksonville safety. It gave the final lead of 18-13 with 1:44 left and proved to be the most important defensive play of the game.

“That's what I try to talk about every time I'm here or before the season and you ask me how I can continue to improve as a player,” he said. “It's just that when it comes to setting up other guys, whether it's making plays for other guys or pushing the quarterback to my teammates. Obviously, I want to make the play and I want to be the one to get the ball out and get the sack or whatever. (But I'm going to) continue to find ways for me to win myself but also for my brothers to win.”

While he gets back on his feet, he is happy to help everyone else.
