Neighbors and businesses in Fernandina Beach are preparing for possible impacts from Tropical Storm Milton

Just last month there was persistent rain that caused flooding in Fernandina Beach, and just last week that area was also hit by Hurricane Helene.

Residents said they could not take a break from this bad weather as the ground was already saturated.

Elliot Sloan, a Fernandina Beach resident, said they were hit by heavy rains and winds during Helene; However, he still feels like he and his neighbors got lucky.

“It's scary to imagine more storms brewing right after one another,” Sloan said.

Sloan said he was sending his prayers to those who are still trying to repair the damage left by Helene and are now forced to prepare for Milton.

“No one thought the hurricane would devastate Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee and North Carolina. The charts tell you one thing, and you have to prepare for something else,” Sloan said.

A few blocks away at Nana Teresa's Bake Shop, the owner said there had been widespread flooding in the city and Hurricane Helene had exacerbated the problem. The bakery limited its hours during the hurricane and owner Mark Markarian said the same is planned for Milton.

“We have power generators ready for the frozen stuff. If there is a major hurricane, we will donate literally everything. “We will bake everything in the bakery and donate it,” Markarian said.

He said his biggest concern is that another storm could knock down the trees that Hurricane Helene began to damage.

The First Alert Weather Team said September was unusually wet across Northeast Florida, particularly in Nassau County.
