New details emerge following Georgia WR Colbie Young's arrest

ATHENS – New details have emerged regarding the arrest of wide receiver Colbie Young after he was arrested on charges of assault and battery on an unborn child.

According to a police report obtained by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, an officer was dispatched to a residence in Athens shortly before 1 a.m. A 20-year-old woman had gone to Young's apartment to discuss the status of their relationship and the couple began talking for about 20 minutes.

The arrest report states that the conversation became more heated after she discovered Young had been on the phone with another woman. As the argument escalated, the woman involved claimed Young grabbed her by the left bicep and triceps and physically dragged her out of the room. At this point, Young returned to his room and locked the door.

As the woman began packing up her belongings, the police report said she called a friend. At that point, Young allegedly left his room and “picked her up and began squeezing her torso and stomach very hard.” She believed Young was trying to harm her.

The arrest report said the 20-year-old woman had “expressed some concerns about psychological abuse in the past, which have now escalated to alleged physical abuse.” The woman also told the officer that she was “afraid of him.”

The arresting officer examined the woman's injuries and noted that she had a bruise and some discoloration on the lower right side of her chest. She also had “some redness on her right flank.” No injuries were found on the arm she claimed was grabbed. The woman was taken to a local hospital for further medical treatment.

The arresting officer then went to Young's apartment to question him, who stated the relationship with the woman had ended and she had been invited out. Young denied grabbing the woman and that the injuries the woman sustained were not his.

Young was arrested at 4:18 a.m. and remains in jail at the time of publication. His bail is $2,500. Georgia has not yet commented on Young's status. Georgia coach Kirby Smart will speak to reporters next on Tuesday evening.

Young transferred from Miami to Georgia this offseason. In five games, Young had 11 receptions for 149 yards and 2 touchdowns. He led Georgia in receiving yards against Auburn last Saturday, catching 3 passes for 51 yards.

“He continues to grow and get better, and we’re going to need him in our offense,” Smart said of Young in September. “We need him to be able to play more snaps and be in the best shape of his life to play enough snaps.”

This is the seventh Georgia player arrested since March 2024. Trevor Etienne, Smael Mondon, Sacovie White, Bo Hughley and Daniel Harris were all arrested for driving offences. Etienne and Harris both missed a game after their arrest.

Former Georgia wide receiver Rara Thomas was arrested in July on multiple family violence charges and was ultimately dismissed from the team following that arrest. It was the second time Thomas was arrested for family violence during his time in Georgia.

Etienne, Thomas and Young all came to Georgia through the transfer portal.

Georgia is 4-1 this season with a 31-13 win over the Auburn Tigers. Georgia next faces Mississippi State this Saturday. The game is scheduled to kick off at 4:15 p.m. ET. The SEC Network will broadcast the game.
