New York Mets bounce back in Game 1, top Philadelphia Phillies

PHILADELPHIA – Mark Vientos and Brandon Nimmo made another comeback in New York's electrifying run through the National League playoffs, helping the Mets break through for five runs in the eighth inning against two All-Star relievers as they rallied to a 6-2 They beat the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 1 of their division series on Saturday.

The Mets were slowed by Phillies ace Zack Wheeler, managed just one hit in a 1-0 deficit and were unable to create any real scoring opportunities through the first seven innings.

With Wheeler gone after nine strikeouts and a mind-boggling 30 swings-and-misses over 111 pitches, the Mets — whose tumultuous week included a win in a makeup doubleheader in Atlanta — clinched a postseason berth and three games in the NL Wild Card Series Milwaukee – prevailed in the eighth game against Phillies relievers Jeff Hoffman and Matt Strahm.

In true New York style, the Mets had to be put through their paces this October, not just on the scoreboard, but on every at-bat.

Francisco Alvarez hit a leadoff single against Hoffman before three straight batters reached base after 0-2 counts. Francisco Lindor drew a walk after the score was 0-2 and Vientos followed with an equalizer.

Nimmo fired a go-ahead single from Strahm past a drawn infield for a 2-1 lead.
