NFL news, injury updates: Brandon Aiyuk of the 49ers suffered a torn ACL, Xavier Newman of the Jets was released from the hospital

The injury report from Sunday of Week 7 of the NFL season features some big names at the top and some potentially season-altering injuries for several teams across the league. The worst situation of the weekend occurred at the Jets vs. Steelers Sunday Night Football game, when New York guard Xavier Newman was carried off the field on a backboard and taken to a Pittsburgh hospital with a neck injury. Initial reports said Newman was fortunately conscious and moving his limbs when he was taken from Acrisure Stadium.

Other stars, including Cleveland's Deshaun Watson, Washington's Jayden Daniels and San Francisco's Brandon Ayiuk, also had to leave their games early with injuries on Sunday. Here's a look at some news and notes from Week 7.

The scary scene that unfolded at Acrisure Stadium was ultimately a precautionary measure. Jets guard Xavier Newman was evaluated after suffering a neck injury and tests returned a negative result for a serious injury. After the Jets' 37:15 loss to the Steelers, he was able to return to New York with the team. Although the Jets confirmed the neck injury after the game, the extent of the injury is not yet known.

It's another serious injury for the Browns' quarterback, whose career has been marred by scandals, suspensions and long stints on injured reserve. Watson was carted off the field during Cleveland's 21-14 loss to the Bengals after suffering a non-contact injury.

On Monday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that an MRI confirmed that Watson has a torn Achilles tendon that will cost him at least the remainder of the 2024 season. In his three seasons in Cleveland, Watson has played just six games in each of the three years after signing a five-year, $230 million contract.

In another major blow to the 49ers' offense, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk suffered a torn ACL and ACL in San Francisco's 28-18 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Aiyuk remained out of camp this offseason and signed a four-year, $120 million contract extension with $76 million in guaranteed money just before the start of the regular season. The 49ers' offense has been decimated by injuries this season, with George Kittle missing one game and Christian McCaffrey not playing at all in 2024 because of Achilles tendonitis.

The leading candidate for NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year left Washington's 40-7 win over Carolina with a rib injury. While they didn't miss anything in the comfortable win without him, any point in the injury report could be short-lived – if you can take his mother at her word. During the game, she posted on X “He's fine” and Daniels finished the game warming up on the sidelines.

Live10 updates

  • 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk is out for the season with a torn ACL and ACL

The San Francisco 49ers wide receiver suffered a season-ending knee injury in Sunday's 28-18 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, tests confirmed Monday, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Aiyuk has a torn ACL and ACL, and his knee may show further damage. He will undergo surgery in the near future.

Aiyuk caught a pass across the middle of the field late in the first half of Sunday's game at Levi's Stadium, but his knee gave way badly when he was hit and tripped. Ayiuk remained on the field for quite a while before finally leaving the medical tent. He was eventually dragged to the locker room and ejected from the game.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game that the team feared he had suffered an ACL injury.

  • DK Metcalf “Week to Week” with Grade 1 MCL sprain

Metcalf landed hard on a catch attempt in the third quarter of the Seahawks' win over the Falcons.

“He banged up his knee a little bit on that catch on the sideline,” Seattle head coach Mike Macdonald said. “I'm not sure how serious it is. “At this point we’re optimistic, so it doesn’t look too bad.”

The Seahawks take on the Bills in Week 8 on Sunday.

  • Commander QB Jayden Daniels “week to week”

The Commanders' rookie QB left Sunday's 40-7 win over the Panthers early with a rib injury after taking several hard hits.

Daniels was ruled out after half-time after it was initially questionable whether he would return. After the game, his mother, Regina Jackson, posted on X that her son was “fine.”

The Commanders face the Bears on Sunday.

  • The NFL is making a change to the Sunday Night Football schedule for Week 9

The Minnesota Vikings and Indianapolis Colts travel to Sunday Night Football in Week 9, while the Philadelphia Eagles and Jacksonville Jaguars are off in the afternoon.

  • Tua Tagovailoa returns to Dolphins practice on Wednesday

If Tagovailoa ends up completing the concussion protocol, he would be available for the Dolphins' game on Sunday against the Cardinals.

  • There is no QB change pending for the Giants

Daniel Jones will start again next Monday night against the Steelers.

Jones has 1,442 passing yards, six touchdowns and four interceptions in seven games this season.

  • Deshaun Watson's season is over with a torn Achilles tendon

  • Raiders QB Aidan O'Connell is expected to miss four to six weeks

  • No news yet on QB Jayden Daniels' health following a rib injury

The commanders, like the rest of us, are waiting to hear about Jayden Daniels' health. He left Washington's 40-7 win over the Panthers early with what was later determined to be a rib injury. Mike Jones of The Athletic reports that it could be a few days before we hear anything about Daniels' status for Sunday's game against the Bears.

  • Mike Tomlin is pleased with the results of Russell Wilson's decision

After the Steelers' 37-15 win over the Jets on Sunday night, head coach Mike Tomlin sat at the podium and answered questions about one of his boldest decisions yet: starting veteran QB Russell Wilson instead of young Justin Fields.

Tomlin is perhaps the most professional coach in the entire NFL. He didn't use the presser to soak up compliments, but rather to honestly evaluate his team's play. But he allowed himself a moment of levity to end the matter when retired NFL wide receiver and Pittsburgh native Brandon Marshall stopped by to ask him a question.
