NY Giants vs Philadelphia Eagles live score, NFL Week 7 postgame updates

EAST RUTHERFORD – There were many moments in Saquon Barkley's six years with the New York Giants when he was viewed as the complete offensive player, the only real threat to trouble a defense with a legitimate chance to score.

That was apparently the case again on Sunday afternoon at Big Blue, only this time Barkley was wearing the green of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Barkley and the Eagles turned his MetLife Stadium homecoming into a fourth-quarter laugher as the Giants' Daniel Jones-led offense failed to go its own way despite the return of Malik Nabers for much of the eventual 28-3 loss to Philly.

Jones was hesitant to pull the trigger on passes the entire time. That may have something to do with the complete implosion of an offensive line that is playing for the first time this season without star left tackle Andrew Thomas, who is out for the season after undergoing surgery for a Lisfranc injury last week .

Josh Ezeudu started for Thomas, the first player other than the usual starting five to crack the lineup seven weeks into the season, and he was hit for the first of eight sacks for the Eagles (4-2) in the opening series.

This game has been circled on the calendar for both franchises since Barkley left the Giants after six years to sign a free agent deal with the Eagles. The last time Barkley participated in this rivalry was in January, the finale of the 2023 regular season, and he helped the Giants beat the Eagles.

Barkley's highly publicized exit and subsequent trip on the Turnpike have been the center of attention in the wake of a high-profile divorce, thanks in part to the “Hard Knocks” cameras this spring. This included Giants co-owner John Mara telling general manager Joe Schoen that he would lose sleep if Barkley signed with the Eagles, which he did.

And Mara's nightmare played out as scripted, even though the Giants didn't put any emotion into their decision to re-sign Barkley, making the decision based solely on positional value, his age and analytics that suggested running backs were a played a role. Production declines after age 27.

None of that mattered on Sunday. Well, none of that was any consolation for what happened.

Because Barkley was booed early and often and headed out of the home crowd every time he touched the ball.

His straightforward answer spoke volumes about whether it was indeed a back-and-forth between the team's brass and the franchise's despised former face as the former Pro Bowler walked to the sideline late in the third quarter.

Barkley finished the game with 176 yards rushing and a touchdown on 17 carries in the second quarter and threw two vintage Barkley haymakers with runs of 55 and 38 yards.

The Giants (2-5) had Drew Lock finish the game at quarterback for Daniel Jones, who completed 14 of 21 passes for 99 yards. That just begs the question of whether Giants coach Brian Daboll will consider a change at quarterback for next Monday night's game against the Steelers in Pittsburgh.

It's not like Lock offered anything special, but the offense under Jones has remained in neutral, if not regress, over the last two weeks. The Giants have 10 touchdowns this season, third fewest in the NFL.

The Giants are averaging just 14.14 points per game this season and Daboll is calling the shots.

The Giants haven't won at home this year, they've scored just one touchdown in MetLife, and the fourth-quarter performance against the Eagles was a sluggish, uninspired finish that brings into focus things that plague losing teams like effort and a lack of emotion .

Jones sits on the bench. The Giants didn't get the ball to Malik Nabers in the second half. Dexter Lawrence and Brian Burns are visibly injured. Thomas is out for the season. Kayvon Thibodeaux is on injured reserve after wrist surgery and won't be able to return until next month at the earliest.

And Barkley showed the talent the Giants fell in love with when they took him No. 2 overall at their expense on Sunday and all eyes were on his return.

Suddenly this is a crucial time in the season for Daboll and Schoen and the rest of this season.

Here's our analysis from the entire game:

Brian Daboll said you can't win many games in the NFL by scoring seven points in last Sunday's loss to the Bengals.

Well, it's even harder when you score fewer points.

Jalen Hurts scored on the tush push from one yard out and the Eagles extended their lead to 21-3. Saquon Barkley rushed for 130 yards with a touchdown and outplayed the Giants offense as a whole today.

GIANT

Passing: Daniel Jones 13 of 19, 93 yards

Rushing: Jones 5-20, Tyrone Tracy 2-3, Devin Singletary 1-1

Receiving: Malik Nabers 4-41, Wan'Dale Robinson 2-11, Daniel Bellinger 1-11, Darius Slayton 1-11, Tracy 3-9, Eric Gray 1-7, Singletary 1-3

EAGLE

Passing: Jalen Hurts 8-10, 98 yards, TD

Rushing: Saquon Barkley 9-75, TD; Kenneth Gainwell 5-20, Hurts 2-0

Reception: AJ Brown 4-74, TD; Gainwell 1-11, Barkley 1-10, Craig Calcaterra 1-5, Devonta Smith 1-(-2)

The Giants' offense continues to come up empty at home. Even if Big Blue reaches the end zone, they don't.

With nine seconds left in the second quarter, rookie Theo Johnson caught a touchdown pass from Daniel Jones but was warned for offensive pass interference. It was a stunning turnaround for the Giants, who came within one score despite virtually no performance in the entire first half.

With no timeouts, the Giants decided to send the field goal unit onto the field and Greg Joseph hit a 38-yard field goal to get the score off the board. Still, the Giants still have a lot of work to do offensively to get back into this game.

Saquon Barkley set up a touchdown for… Saquon Barkley broke off a 55-yard run, coincidentally on the Giants sideline. Three plays later, Barkley received the handoff from Jalen Hurts and used the momentum of the pile into the end zone to score his fifth rushing score of the year.

Dexter Lawrence promised “war” on Saquon Barkley’s return to MetLife and has been dominant so far. He had two tackles against Barkley and his eighth sack of the year. Not only is that a career high, but Lawrence has also passed Lions star Aidan Hutchinson, who is out for the second time.

Sloppy first 15 minutes between the Giants and Eagles as they play: 'Who can screw up more' The Giants have sacked Jalen Hurts three times so far, with a sack each for Brian Burns, Azeez Ojulari and Dexter Lawrence.

Lawrence got two run stops from Saquon Barkley, whose longest run was 8 yards.

The Eagles still haven't scored a point in the first quarter of their first six games.

Josh Ezeudu believes he is in a much better position to fill in for Andrew Thomas at left tackle this season than he was last year. He will get a chance to prove himself on Sunday against the Eagles, starting alongside left guard Jon Runyan Jr. in place of Thomas.

Ezeudu struggled at times last year as the Giants' offensive line imploded after Thomas suffered a hamstring injury in the season opener and missed a total of seven games. The third-year offensive lineman gets the chance instead of the Giants moving right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor to the other side, which likely would have resulted in Evan Neal starting at right tackle.

DT Dexter Lawrence (hip) and OLB Brian Burns (groin) are active and expected to play for the Giants. CB Darius Slay (knee) is active for the Eagles and will play.

NY Giants vs. Philadelphia Eagles History

  • Series balance: The Eagles lead 93-88-2
  • Last Giants win: January 7, 2024 (27-10 in East Rutherford)
  • Eagles' last win: December 25, 2023 (December 33-25 in Philadelphia)

Prediction: NY Giants vs. Eagles

The choice: Eagles 16, Giants 10

Here's why: Whichever team decides not to miss opportunities will emerge victorious. The Eagles were fortunate to make a crucial play here or there to avoid the kind of losses that left the Giants feeling empty inside against the Commanders, Cowboys and Bengals. The difference between Jalen Hurts and Daniel Jones is that the former continues to find ways to put the game on the line and help his team win. The Giants have only scored one offensive touchdown at home this year, and Jones has yet to pitch a complete game at MetLife.

Saquon Barkley's return to MetLife will get all the attention. The last time he was in the building he helped the Giants beat the Eagles. He wasn't particularly productive against the Browns (18 carries, 47 yards, average of 2.6 per carry). Neither team will have their left tackle — Andrew Thomas (foot) is out for the season while Jordan Mailata has a hamstring injury.
