NEW YORK – The New York Mets' first attempt to protect home field at Citi Field in the National League Championship Series went off with a whimper.

In Game 3, the Dodgers made it a one-sided affair with three home runs, including a huge hit from Shohei Ohtani, shutting out the Mets for the second time in the series.

But the Mets have had their backs against the wall more than once during the 2024 season and will look to prove their resolve in Game 4 on Thursday at 8:08 p.m.

“Stay the course. Keep competing,” Francisco Lindor said after the loss. “Come back tomorrow and give it everything you have. They are a really good team. They have a really good pitching staff and good hitters. You have to give them everything or you won’t win.”

The Mets could be encouraged by the presence of Jose Quintana on the mound for Game 4. This postseason, Quintana pitched six scoreless innings in the team's Game 3 win in the Wild Card round against the Brewers. Then, in Game 4 of the NLDS against the Phillies, Quintana allowed one run (not an earned one) in five innings before Lindor sent the Mets packing with a six-inning grand slam.

The Mets need Quintana to try to repeat that feat as the Dodgers try to take a stranglehold on the series. They lead the best-of-seven NLCS 2-1 with two more games at Citi Field before a tentative return to Los Angeles.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto was tagged for five earned runs in three innings in his postseason debut against the Padres in the NLDS, but recovered to throw in five scoreless runs in the Dodgers' decisive Game 5 win. In Yamamoto's only start against the Mets, he struck out nine hits in six innings but also gave up four runs (three earned) in a no-decision.
