Oops, the new Zelda game is "eight times the size" of Link's Awakening because the developers at Nintendo and Echoes of Wisdom just couldn't help it

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is many times larger than the last top-down game in the series.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is the first mainline game with the titular princess at the helm, the first game in the series with a woman in the director's chair, and the first top-down game in the series ever this damn big.

Grezzo's studio director Satoshi Terada said this in Nintendo's latest “Ask the Developer” blog, explaining that the studio is full of lifelong Zelda fans who grew up with the original classics before joining the team for Ocarina of Time 3D, Majora's Mask 3D and have connected the Link's Awakening remake.

“Everyone has a lot of respect for the show,” Terada said. “Many of the staff love it and have played the games many times. That's why even now, when we're developing a new top-down game in the series, we're always thinking about how we can give that Legend of Zelda-like feel to the game.” To match that feeling, the Grezzo began developer “added so many things we wanted” that the map swelled and “ended up being eight times the size of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening.”

The Legend of Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma said it was originally “four times as big, but then before we knew it…” Despite Hyrule being exponentially larger and another twisted underbelly hiding at the back, Echoes of Wisdom still wanted to capture the mildly entertaining exploration of other top-down entries and “the exploration is not intimidating”. Aonuma explains it's “a slightly different feeling compared to the vast worlds of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom.”

Luckily, it's not an either/or situation. Aonuma recently confirmed that 2D Zelda games will continue to coexist with 3D games, a la Breath of the Wild – although, as even they admit, Nintendo developers may not always be able to seamlessly connect them across the series' confusing canon , “it is not easy.” to touch on the tradition.
