Overnight, the likelihood of storms is greatest in the south, after which calm weather returns

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – We are keeping an eye on the areas along and south of Interstate 80 for the possibility of a storm tonight.

Your first warning: The southern zone has the highest chance

Cloud cover has increased as expected this evening and we have seen an increase in some precipitation on the radar. However, not everything reaches the ground; Although dew points have increased today, there is still quite a bit of dry air beneath these clouds where the falling rain evaporates. However, there could be some rain north of Interstate 80 early in the night.

The more robust development comes closer to or after midnight, when a cluster of showers and storms could develop along and south of the Interstate 80 corridor. One or two stronger storms with some small hail are possible, but widespread severe weather is unlikely. Some lucky places could see decent rainfall, perhaps exceeding at least half an inch, in a narrow corridor in our southern zone.

With more clouds, temperatures shouldn't drop as much as they have over the last few cooler nights. Lows will be in the low to mid 50s.

Calmer, windier days for the weekend

As isolated showers or clouds disappear on Friday, it will become sunnier again. We will feel a light easterly breeze that will help moderate our highs a bit. Values ​​in the low to mid 70s seem likely. If you have plans for Friday evening, it should be a great evening to be out and about. However, if you are traveling late, a light jacket may be necessary.

A cold front with stronger southerly winds awaits us on Saturday. This could result in some gusts reaching 25 to 35 mph, which would make for quite a breezy wind. These winds and lots of sunshine will also push temperatures into the mid to upper 80s.

Another cold front will move into the area late today into Saturday night. This will mean there will be some cloud cover and we still can't completely rule out a shower in our northeast zone. However, most of the TV9 viewing area will be missing. Temperatures will drop into the upper 40s to lower 50s and winds will shift to the northwest behind the front.

These winds will remain blustery on Sunday, bringing cooler air masses for a few days. High temperatures will already be in the low to mid 70s by the end of the weekend, although there should be near total sunshine throughout the day.

A prolonged period of calm weather

For the following work and school week we will be prepared for a period of fairly calm conditions lasting several days. The first few days will be closest to seasonal normals, but will still reach values ​​at least a few degrees above those values. However, lows in the lower 40s and highs in the lower 70s will be quite pleasant.

Temperatures show a warming trend for the remainder of the 9-day forecast. Expect temperatures to be back in the upper 70s to low 80s during the day, with nighttime lows in the 40s to lower 50s.

We spend most of this time day and night with almost completely clear skies. This means there will be practically no rainfall in the middle of the country.
