Packers punter Daniel Whelan is emerging as one of the team's best weapons

play

GREEN BAY – The Green Bay Packers have a lot of weapons on this team.

But probably the greatest was her suitor.

Daniel Whelan has been a consistent force on the Packers' special teams. In Sunday's 24-22 win over the Houston Texans, Whelan had five punts for 284 yards, a 56.8 average, including a long of 66 yards.

“I just did my job,” Whelan said of his performance. “I couldn't ask for a better day. My job is to divide the field and I just did my job.”

He also has the responsibility of being the holder on field goals. What has made this job more difficult than usual is the well-documented number of kickers the Packers have worked with during Whelan's two seasons in Green Bay.

Most recently, the Packers signed veteran Brandon McManus to replace Brayden Narveson. McManus scored a field goal in the game. A 45 yard kick. For the victory.

Matt Orzech's snap to Whelan was low, but Whelan managed to get the ball and set it up for McManus' game-winning pass.

It's a stressful moment for coaches, teammates and the nearly 80,000 fans at Lambeau Field who have suffered their fair share of heartbreak over field goals.

Whelan didn't think much of it.

“I don’t even think about it, I just see the ball and put it down,” he said of the game-winning shot. “Everyone says 'Good stop', but it's the same for me.”

The humble Whelan is developing into one of the best players in the league. He has 19 punts for 869 yards and an average of 45.7 yards per kick this season.

“I know there's been a little rotation of people here, and I'm a little older and more strict in what I want from them,” McManus said. “They did a great job all week and were excited to be here.”

While Whelan isn't the type to brag or brag, his coaches do it for him. Packers coach Matt LaFleur believes Whelan is the best player he has ever seen.

“I can’t say enough great things about him, he definitely had a big impact on the game today,” LaFleur said. “If you can average 56.8 yards per punt, that’s pretty darn good. I don't want to have to use it so often. I tell him every week that I hope we just use him as a holder. We needed him today and he did a great job.”
