Padres manager Mike Shildt fights back against the Dodgers' Dave Roberts and defends Manny Machado

San Diego Padres manager Mike Shildt defended Manny Machado as he threw against the Los Angeles Dodgers dugout in Game 2 of the National League Division Series. Machado's baseball throw almost hit Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, but Shildt believes Machado had no intention behind the throw.

“I don’t think that was intentional at all,” Shildt said Tuesday, via Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Roberts had previously said there was “intention” behind Machado’s throw.

“It was disturbing,” Roberts said. “Obviously I’ve had a relationship with Manny for years. There was intention behind it. It didn't almost hit me because there was a net. And that was very annoying. If it was directed at me, I would be very – it's pretty disrespectful. So I don't know his intention. I don't want to speak for him. But I saw the video. And the ball was pointed at me with something behind it.”

Roberts later called the Padres a team that likes to take on the role of “villain.”

“The team over there likes the villainous role,” Roberts told reporters.

Shildt defended his team and appeared to take shots at Roberts while describing his perspective on the conflicts.

“I might just have a different philosophy in dealing with it,” Shild said Tuesday. “Listen, I came to this game to help players make the most of their God-given abilities and compete on the field and respect the opponent. I will not and will never disparage any other player on any other team, especially anyone I have. “I haven't done it in the past, and I won't do it to a collective team either. I have a lot of respect for your club, the players in your club.

There was already clear tension between the two teams entering this series as NL West rivals, but those tensions have heightened significantly in the first two games of the series. Between the opinions of the two managers, Jack Flaherty and Manny Machado, calling each other out and Dodgers fans throwing objects at Padres players, this series has already been as intense as it gets.

The teams will take the field again on Tuesday for Game 3 at Petco Park.
