Philadelphia Phillies are on the verge of elimination after an ugly loss in Game 3

The Philadelphia Phillies are one loss away from ending their season.

This would be the second year in a row that their season would have ended before they felt like it should have if they failed to advance, only this time it would be in the NLDS round of the playoffs against their heated one Rivals, the New York Mets, will come into the Championship Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Everything was ugly in that 7-2 defeat.

The home runs that Aaron Nola gave up with increasing frequency over the last two seasons weighed on him twice. The lineup reverted to its undisciplined self after believing its Game 2 win had turned the tide. And the bullpen once again performed poorly in the playoffs.

Just a year later it's the same story.

There really were no highlights in this game for the Phillies.

They were down 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning when Pete Alonso hit an opposite-field home run, and although they had a few base runners to tie things up in the very next frame, they were unable to score.

Nola gave up another solo shot early in the fourth inning to increase their deficit.

At that point, even a two-run lead felt like something Philadelphia couldn't overcome, and when it finally looked like they were in the bottom of the sixth with two men on base and no one out, Bryce , had something going Harper saved Sean Manaea with a swing and a miss on three consecutive throws.

The next batter, Nick Castellanos, hit a double play that ended the inning without them being able to capitalize on the situation.

Another result that has become too commonplace for this Phillies team.

Things got out of hand in the bottom of the sixth when Nola loaded the bases to end his night and Orion Kerkering failed to get all three outs before allowing Starling Marte to hit a two-run single that pushed the lead to 4: 0 expanded.

After that it was really over.

The Mets added two more in the seventh inning, and it took until the bottom of the eighth inning for Philadelphia to score its first runs, when both Harper and Castellanos hit RBI singles.

That was too little, too late.

The Phillies now go into Wednesday down 2-1 in a series they were favorites to win and must win back-to-back or face an early postseason exit for the second straight year.
