Plane crashes in Utah Lake, rescuers search for pilots and passengers

The plane is submerged in 8 feet of water and officials expect to recover the plane later Friday. Investigators believe there were two occupants in the vehicle at the time of the incident.

Authorities are responding to Utah Lake outside Provo, Utah, after a small plane crashed into the body of water near the Provo airport on Friday.

Sergeant. Spence Cannon, public information officer for the Utah County Sheriff's Office, said investigators believe there were two people on the plane when it crashed. He said the first reports of the crash came in around 10 a.m. local time.

“We saw a video of the crash. “Based on the nature of the accident, we believe it is very unlikely that any occupants of the aircraft would survive,” Cannon said.

Cannon also said the plane is currently submerged under eight and a half feet of water.

On Friday afternoon, a private barge and divers attempted to pull the plane from the lake, but officials had recovered some debris from the crash.

The crash is under investigation

In a post on X, the National Transportation Safety Board said its team is currently investigating the crash.

The NTSB identified the aircraft as a Cirrus SR22.
