Plane crashes into Utah Lake on route to Provo airport

Two men were aboard a single-engine plane that crashed into Utah Lake early Friday, although authorities say their survival “doesn't look very good.”

Officials said the plane, a Cirrus SR22, had been cleared to land at the Provo airport when it went down in the water around 10 a.m

None of the bodies were recovered from the wreckage, which was located near the boat harbor. Since the aircraft is about 2.5 meters deep in the water, the crews are having problems recovering it.

“As hard as the plane hits the water, the chances of survival don't look very good,” said Sgt. Garrett Dutson of the Utah County Sheriff's Office.

The men's identities have not yet been released.

Several witnesses saw the plane crash and called 911 to report the incident.

Provo Fire and Police are on scene, along with the Utah Highway Patrol Dive Team and Utah Country Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue.

The state park is closed and people are asked to leave the area. Those planning to arrive at the park later in the day are asked to stay away. Officials expect it could be hours before the park reopens.
