Police say man lied about kidnapping in connection with Colorado AMBER Alert

PUEBLO, Colo. (KKTV) – Police believe a man lied about a kidnapping that led to an AMBER Alert in Colorado this week.

The ordeal began around 5:15 p.m. Wednesday night when Pueblo police were called to Big Daddy's Sunset Bowl along Prairie Avenue on reports of a vehicle being taken with a child inside.

“Officers arrived and gathered information from the reporting party, Daniel Reyes, 34, that his cousin 'Sandra,' who was 13 years old, was in his stolen white F-250,” police wrote in a news release. “The investigation escalated quickly and spanned multiple jurisdictions and agencies. The F-250 was located in the 1100 block of Cypress St after an extensive search and was unoccupied.”

About four hours after searching for Sandra, investigators learned that the teen had no connection to Reyes and was safe at home. The AMBER alarm was then canceled.

“While working on an armed, barricaded suspect incident north of the city, the men and women of dispatch and our department, other responders and community members demonstrated the highest level of teamwork, tenacity and dedication to locate the reported kidnapping victim,” said Chris Noeller , Pueblo police chief. “False reports waste countless manpower and resources, not only in our community but also in surrounding areas, limiting law enforcement’s ability to respond to additional needs. Our department is grateful that the juvenile was safe during this incident.”

Reyes is charged with attempting to influence a public official, a Class 4 felony.
