As the counting of votes in the assembly elections in Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir took place on Tuesday, social media was flooded with reactions that the polls predicting an easy win for the Congress in Haryana appeared to be wrong. A dominant theme in the flood of posts on X (formerly Twitter) was Pradeep Gupta, chairman and chief executive of polling firm Axis My India.

Gupta, known for his election predictions, became the subject of sharp reactions from close observers of the election results.

“Exit polls have become a joke in India. Band kar do bhaai inko (Please end it),” said X user Siddharth.

“It sucks to be Yashwant Deshmukh and Pradeep Gupta today. This is a disaster,” said another user, Abhi.

What did the election polls predict for Haryana?

Several polls last week predicted a clear majority for the Congress in Haryana.

The Axis My India election polls predicted a clear majority for the Congress, predicting 53 to 65 seats in the 90-member Haryana Assembly. The agency predicted that the BJP would win 18 to 28 seats while the INLD-BSP alliance was expected to win 1 to 5 seats. As for Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the polls suggested that there will be no seats at all.

When Pradeep Gupta cried on live television

In June this year, Pradeep Gupta collapsed on live television as the results of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections were announced, upending his agency's exit predictions. According to the India Today-Axis My India exit polls, the NDA was expected to win 361-401 seats in the Lok Sabha polls. The INDIA bloc was expected to win 131 to 166 seats, the exit poll said, with 8 to 20 seats given to other parties.

Gupta collapsed and had to be consoled by the India Today anchors.
