Predicting the 12 teams in the College Football Playoff

play

This week there was only one game with two ranked opponents, so there shouldn't have been much turmoil, right? Well, it was a chaotic Saturday with plenty of surprises that changed the balance of the Top 25 and our College Football Playoff predictions.

Our top four remains: Ohio State, Texas, Miami and BYU. The top four conference champions receive first-round byes. There must also be a Group 5 representative. But there were a lot of changes after that, as Alabama was stunned by unranked Vanderbilt. And that's just the beginning.

1. Ohio State (5-0, 2-0)

It may have been a chaotic weekend, but the Buckeyes were having none of it, easily beating Iowa 35-7, and the only missed touchdown came late. The offense started a little slow, but the defense held Iowa to 226 total yards. Last week: 1. Next: on Saturday in Oregon.

2. Texas (5-0, 1-0)

The Longhorns weren't playing, so they had the extra week to prepare for their biggest rival — a game that now holds more significance. Last week: 2. Next: against Oklahoma (in Dallas) on Saturday.

3. Miami (6-0, 2-0)

The Hurricanes appeared to be the best ACC team by far. Then came Cal, which slowly and steadily developed into a contender under coach Justin Wilcox. The Bears had a 25-point lead. Then suddenly they didn't do it anymore. Last week:3. Next: on October 19th in Louisville.

4. BYU (5-0, 2-0)

Are the Cougars the best team in the Big 12? The only other team that can currently make a claim is Iowa State. BYU had a bye this week. Last week: 4. Next: vs. Arizona on Saturday.

5. Oregon (5-0, 2-0)

The Ducks had one game in the spotlight on Friday and had no problems with Michigan State, winning 31-10. Oregon led 31-0 before the Spartans scored. It would have been easy to look past this opponent when the big opponent looms. That didn't happen. Last week:6. Next: vs. Ohio State on Saturday.

6. Penn State (5-0, 1-0)

Drew Allar threw for 237 yards with a touchdown and ran for another score to propel Penn State past UCLA 27-11. The Nittany Lions played without star running back Nick Singleton but had no problems with the Bruins, who trailed 27-3 midway through the final quarter. Last week:7. Next: against USC on Saturday.

7. Georgia (4-1, 2-1)

The Bulldogs bounced back from the loss to Alabama by holding off Auburn 31-13 behind the 240 yards rushing of Carson Beck, who completed 23 of 28 attempts. Don't be surprised if the Bulldogs finish in the top four again. Last week:9. Next: vs. Mississippi State on Saturday.

8. Mississippi (5-1, 1-1)

The Rebels stormed out to a 24-3 halftime lead and never looked back, defeating host South Carolina 27-3. The Rebels may have had a bad loss last week, but all the other upsets this week almost make it seem like it never happened. Last week: 10. Next: on Saturday at LSU.

9. Alabama (5-1, 1-1)

Hangover from a big win over Georgia? Perhaps. The Crimson Tide weren't supposed to lose to Vanderbilt, which they did, 40-35. For the Commodores, it is easily the biggest win in school history. Last week: 5. Next: against South Carolina on Saturday.

10. Boise State (4-1, 3-0)

The Broncos defeated Utah State 62-30 and are looking more and more like they will be the Group of 5 representative. Ashton Jeanty ran for another 186 yards, giving him a solid 1,031 yards this season, and we're only in October. Last week: 12. Next: on Saturday in Hawaii.

11. Clemson (4-1, 3-0)

The Tigers' only loss came in the season opener against Georgia 34-3, and the score was 6-0 at halftime. Clemson has since won four straight and looked impressive doing so. Last week: Not ranked: Next: on Saturday at Wake Forest.

12. Tennessee (4-1, 1-1)

The Volunteers have often flopped against Florida in the past. Well, they flopped a week earlier, losing to Arkansas 19-14. The difference here was an 11-yard run by Malachi Singleton with 1:17 remaining. It was Arkansas' first home win against a top-five opponent since defeating No. 3 volunteers in 1999. Last week:8 Next: against Florida on Saturday.

Dropped out: Missouri (4-1, 1-1, lost to Texas A&M 41-10).

Bubble clock: Notre Dame (4-1, did not play), USC (3-2, 1-2, lost to Minnesota), Michigan (4-2, 2-1, lost to Washington 27-17), LSU (4-1 , 1-0, did not play), Iowa State (5-0, 2-0), beat Baylor 43-21), Oklahoma (4-1, 1-1, did not play).

This is what the mount would look like:

No. 12 Tennessee vs. No. 5 Oregon

No. 9 Alabama vs. No. 8 Mississippi

No. 11 Clemson vs. No. 6 Penn State

No. 10 Boise State vs. No. 7 Georgia

That would give us the quarter-finals

No. 12 Tennessee-No. 5 Oregon winners vs. No. 4 BYU

No. 9 Alabama-No. 8 Mississippi winners vs. No. 1 Ohio State

No. 11 Clemson No. 6 Penn State winners vs. No. 3 Miami

No. 10 Boise State-No. 7 Georgia winners vs. No. 2 Texas
