Protesters call on NV Energy and Public Utilities Commission to keep energy affordable

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Dozens of community members gathered in protest of rising utility costs outside the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada consumer meeting on Wednesday.

During the consumer sessions, several people said their bills had increased. Some say they have seen gains of hundreds of dollars in just a few years.

On Wednesday, the group spoke out against NV Energy's high tariffs. They also called on the Public Utilities Commission to consider more renewable energy sources. The group said these sources were cleaner and would help keep high costs down.

“In Nevada, we have extremely high tax rates, meaning that in many cases Nevadans are paying over 10 percent of their annual income for utilities,” said Kristee Watson, executive director of the Nevada Conservation League. “This is simply too much of a burden as Nevadans have to choose between things like groceries and medicine to keep the lights on.”
