Pueblo man arrested after false kidnapping report, triggering AMBER Alert

PUEBLO, Colo. — Pueblo police have arrested a man in connection with a false kidnapping report that triggered an AMBER Alert on Wednesday, the department said Thursday morning.

This case began around 5:14 p.m. Wednesday when Pueblo police were dispatched to Sunset Bowling Alley at 1227 S. Prairie Avenue on a report of kidnapping and motor vehicle theft.

The reporting party, Daniel Reyes, 34, said his cousin Sandra, who is 13, was in his white F-250 when someone stole the car.

“The investigation escalated quickly and spanned multiple jurisdictions and agencies,” Pueblo police said.

An extensive search ended with the discovery of the car, which was found empty on the 1100 block of Cypress Street.

Around 9 p.m., the Colorado Bureau of Investigation issued an AMBER Alert for the girl.

Approximately four hours into the investigation and search, investigators received unknown information and learned that the allegedly abducted child had no relationship with Reyes and that she was safe at home.

Reyes was interviewed by police and arrested for attempting to influence a public servant, a Class 4 felony. He was taken to the Pueblo County Detention Center.

He is awaiting a consultation on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.

“While working on an armed, barricaded suspect incident on the north side of the city, the men and women of dispatch and our department, other responders and community members demonstrated the highest level of teamwork, tenacity and dedication to locate the reported kidnapping victim,” Police Chief Chris shared Noeller with. “False reports waste countless manpower and resources, not only in our community but also in surrounding areas, limiting law enforcement’s ability to respond to additional needs. Our department is grateful that the juvenile was safe during this incident.”

This is a developing story and will be updated as we learn more.
