Raiders news: Aidan O'Connell injured his thumb against the Rams

The change at the quarterback position continued Sunday as new starter Aidan O'Connell had to leave Sunday's game at the Los Angeles Rams with a thumb injury.

Former starter Gardner Minshew replaced O'Connell late in the first quarter and the score was 0-0. The Raiders said it was questionable whether he would return. But coach Antonio Pierce said on the broadcast that O'Connell likely won't return on Sunday.

O'Connell appeared to have injured his hand on a pass in which he was penalized for intentional grounding. After the series ended, he went to the locker room. As the Raiders took possession of the ball, Minshew entered the game.

O'Connell replaced Minshew in Game 5 in Denver and was named the starting quarterback for Week 6 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Minshew won a training camp battle against O'Connell, who started 10 games as a rookie last year.

Now we'll see how long this injury will require Minshew to spell O'Connell, a fourth-round draft pick out of Purdue in 2023.

UPDATE:
NFL Media reported that O'Connell likely has a broken thumb.
