IND vs NZ: Rishabh Pant lies injured as Dhruv Jurel steps out to take over (X)

Rishabh Pant appeared to be in pain after being hit on the knee by Ravindra Jadeja when Dhruv Jurel was brought in as substitute wicket-keeper.

Rishabh Pant was injured on the second day of the first Test of the three-match series between India and New Zealand at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Thursday.

The wicket-keeper was hit on the last ball of the 37th over when a delivery from Ravindra Jadeja hit him flush on the knee.

Jadeja Jad threw the ball outwards but the ball turned sharply back inwards as Devon Conway tried to shoot hard through the offside. The ball whizzed past the inside edge and landed just wide of the off-stump. The ball finally hit Pant's right knee roll as he fell to the ground, grimacing in pain.

Pant was limping when the physiotherapist came out to check. He was treated on the ground while the entire team was worried.

Dhruv Jurel came out with gloves as the stand-in wicketkeeper despite KL Rahul being in the starting XI.

India vs New Zealand: 1st Test, Day 2 – LIVE

Earlier, Conway fired New Zealand to 82-1 after the tourists beat India to record their lowest ever home score of 46.

Fast bowlers Matt Henry and William O'Rourke combined to defeat India in 31.2 overs in the second session after the hosts decided to bat under cloudy skies. The opening day of the Test was a blur.

It was India's third lowest Test score ever. The previous lowest home score was 75 against the West Indies in 1987 in New Delhi.

Their lowest total is 36 against Australia in a pink-ball Adelaide Test in 2020. They lost against England at Lord's in 1974 with 42.

New Zealand mounted a strong reply, leading by 36 runs at tea after Conway put together 67 runs for the first wicket, with skipper Tom Latham making 15.

Will Young, who replaced the injured Kane Williamson, batted alongside Conway on 61 for five.

Conway took over the Indian attack as he reached fifty off 54 balls with a six off spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.

Kuldeep Yadav hit the next ball and sent Latham back with his left-arm wrist spin as India successfully reviewed the decision in their favor after the umpire rejected the appeal.

Earlier, Rishabh Pant top-scored with 20 in a disastrous Indian innings that featured five ducks, including that of star batsman Virat Kohli.

Henry ended the innings with a five-wicket haul and his final knock against Kuldeep was his 100th Test wicket.

Tim Southee struck first in the seventh over with the score at nine, bowling Indian captain Rohit Sharma through the gate with a sharp inswinger after making two.

O'Rourke struck in his first over to catch Kohli at leg gully without increasing the score, silencing the stunned home crowd.

There was a brief rain interruption but there was no respite for India when the players returned as India fell to 33-5 and then 34-6 at the lunch break.

The wickets continued to fall and soon after lunch O'Rourke (4-22) and Henry (5-15) dismissed the remaining four batsmen, helped by some great catches.
