Ronaldo scores again as Portugal beat Poland in the Nations League

Cristiano Ronaldo scored in his third consecutive Nations League game and Portugal maintained their perfect record with a 3-1 win over Poland on Saturday.

Bernardo Silva and Ronaldo gave Portugal a 2-0 half-time lead in their Group A1 game in Warsaw.

Piotr Zielinski scored for Poland late in the second period before a Jan Bednarek own goal ended their hopes of a fightback.

Portugal took the lead after 26 minutes. Ruben Neves threw the ball into the penalty area where Bruno Fernandes cushioned the ball for Silva, earning his 96th international cap, to score with a volley.

While Poland relied on the counterattack, Portugal were further rewarded for their positive approach with a second goal ten minutes later.

Rafael Leao stormed towards the penalty area and unleashed a fierce shot that bounced off the post.

Ronaldo reacted quickest, hitting the net after the rebound and scoring his 133rd international goal.

It was also the 39-year-old's third goal in three Nations League games this season, having scored in wins over Croatia and Scotland.

With Portugal feeling comfortable, coach Roberto Martinez removed both Ronaldo and Leao just after the hour and replaced them with Diogo Jota and Francisco Trincao.

Poland made them sweat when Zielinski scored the goal in the 78th minute.

The Inter Milan midfielder played a lovely one-two with substitute Kacper Urbanski before sliding the ball past Diogo Silva into the Portuguese goal.

However, Portugal restored their two-goal lead when Bednarek scored an own goal in the 88th minute from Nuno Mendes' cross.

Portugal now face Scotland in Glasgow on Tuesday looking for a fourth win in four games in the tournament, while Poland hosts Croatia.
