Russini: Steelers make “aggressive” offer for Davante Adams

The Pittsburgh Steelers' pursuit of a WR2 continues after the team failed to sign Brandon Aiyuk this offseason. With Las Vegas Raiders WR Davante Adams now on the market, Pittsburgh is pushing for the star receiver. According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the Steelers are making an “aggressive” offer to Adams.

“The Pittsburgh Steelers, who as you may recall were interested in trading for Brandon Aiyuk before he signed a contract extension with San Francisco this summer, are also in contact with the Raiders front office. I am told that Pittsburgh is making an aggressive offer,” Russini wrote.

The Steelers have competition for Adams, with the New York Jets currently the biggest threat due to Adams' relationship with QB Aaron Rodgers from his time with the Green Bay Packers. The New Orleans Saints, featuring Derek Carr, Adams' former quarterback in Las Vegas, as well as Pittsburgh's rivals, the Baltimore Ravens, also pose threats.

Adams is reportedly ready to play for Pittsburgh. So if they make a good enough offer, they could get a big upgrade in their receiver room opposite George Pickens. Besides Pickens, Calvin Austin III was the biggest threat in the passing game as a receiver, but he is a slot receiver and the Steelers need outside help. Adams could be a key weapon and give the Steelers' offense a huge boost, and at 3-1, it could be the impetus the team needs to get over the hump in a crowded AFC.

Adams is currently dealing with a hamstring injury that slowed the process of a trade, and he will miss this week because of the injury. But once he's healthy enough to play again, trade talks are expected to become more heated, and with the Nov. 5 trade deadline approaching, the Raiders only have a month left to move Adams.

Currently, the team is looking for a second-round pick plus additional compensation for Adams, who feels a little rich. Still, a team might be willing to give up assets if it believes it has a chance to restructure Adams' contract to keep him at a lower price beyond this year.

After missing Aiyuk and having a hot start to the season, Pittsburgh makes sense to continue to upgrade the receiver room, especially with Justin Fields emerging at quarterback. Adams is the best possible option on the market right now, and signing him would be a huge boon for the Steelers and GM Omar Khan.
