Sabrina Carpenter jokes she accused Eric Adams

play

Sabrina Carpenter uses her concerts to ask the real questions.

The truest of these came out at her show at Madison Square Garden on Sunday: “Should we talk about how I indicted the mayor?”

The “Espresso” hitmaker addressed the charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams, with Carpenter, 25, pointing out her role in the embattled mayor's dealings, as seen in a video shared by a fan.

The connection has to do with Carpenter's controversial 2023 music video “Feather,” which included footage at the Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Brooklyn, New York, which Monsignor Jamie Gigantiello said he approved and later apologized for.

Carpenter's use of the church prompted the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn to restore the church's “sanctity” with a mass and issue a statement saying it was “appalled,” the Associated Press reported at the time. Gigantiello was later stripped of his administrative duties in the diocese.

Now Carpenter's music video is being brought up in connection with the reported federal investigation into Gigantiello's business transactions with the mayor's office, specifically the mayor's former chief of staff Frank Carone.

USA TODAY has reached out to the Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary for comment.

The music video was filmed in September 2023. Following the release of the video and the diocese's statement, the monsignor said he agreed to allow the filming “to further strengthen the bonds between the young creative artists who make up a large part of this community.” “He later said that he had no prior knowledge of any “provocative” events in the church.

“We got approval in advance,” Carpenter told Variety in November about the controversy, adding a nod to her last name: “And Jesus was a carpenter.”

After speaking to the MSG audience on Sunday, Carpenter covered her laughter with her hand before moving on to the next song.

Outside of the political topics, Carpenter's New York concert was well attended, including by Selena Gomez.

The Disney star showed her support for Carpenter by showing off her own moves at the concert, alongside her Emilia Perez co-star Edgar Ramirez.

In a video posted by Gomez on Instagram in which she tagged her boyfriend Benny Blanco, Gomez can be seen dancing to Carpenter's performance of “Juno” and reciting the lyrics: “You make me fall in love with you .”

“I can't keep my hands to myself,” Blanco replied, referencing Gomez's 2015 song.
