Shailene Woodley says Kate Winslet helped her deal with her body image

Shailene Woodley opened up about how Kate Winslet helped her deal with body image pressure in Hollywood, telling host Drew Barrymore that the Titanic star “single-handedly” made her the confident actress she is today is.

“I've been fortunate enough to have people show themselves in a really real, truthful and pure way from a young age,” the Three Women told Barrymore while appearing on The Drew Barrymore Show. At the time, she shared that Winslet helped boost her confidence as an aspiring actress in Hollywood, describing Winslet as having “put in hard work” and not being “afraid to be who she is.”

“She's just real,” Woodley explained, reflecting on how Winslet brought her on at age 21 to help her overcome negative Hollywood standards. The two previously worked together on “Divergent” (2014) and “Insurgent”.

“Because we worked together. I was 21. I had all the influence of public life and I was told, “You should look a certain way” or “You should be a certain thing” or “Don't eat that” or “Do that” or “Color yours.” Hair a different color,'” Woodley shared, adding that Winslet “absolutely sat me down, held my shoulders, did that and said, 'No, no, no, that's not you.' That's the truth.'”

Winslet was very open about the trials and tribulations she experienced as a young actress. During an interview with Porter, Winslet shared that life in her career wasn't particularly pleasant at the beginning.

“I felt like I had to look a certain way or be a certain way, and because there was so much media interference at the time, my life was pretty uncomfortable,” Winslet said at the time. “Journalists would say, 'After Titanic you could have done anything, and yet you chose to do these little things'… and I said, 'Yeah, you bet you did!' Because, guess what, being famous was terrible.'“

“Three Women” is now streaming on Starz.
