Singer talks about the album “Encuentros” and tour essentials

In a weekly series USA TODAY's The EssentialsCelebrities talk about what drives their lives, be it at home, on set or on the go.

Under the guidance of a guardian angel, Becky G has channeled “every part of me” into her new album.

Encuentros, her second regional Mexican album (out now) and a companion to 2023's Esquinas, is a cathartic project inspired by her Mexican roots and the death of her grandfather Miguel.

“Getting this angel in heaven was certainly the catalyst for this journey, and 'Encuentros' is the continuation of that,” she says. In the “Encuentros” artwork, the Latin Grammy-nominated singer also recreates an old family photo as a tribute to her beloved Abuelo.

The Inglewood native compares the album to a darker “night” version of its predecessor. “We go a little deeper, a little more emotional,” she says.

True to her word, the 16-track LP illustrates Becky's return to the soulful brand of regional Mexicanism that colored “Esquinas” with cutting lyricism and an evocative sound that ranges from angsty corridos tumbados and painful ballads (“Como Diablos,” “Ultima Vez”) ranges “) to experimental fusions and lively cumbia pop (“Besándote” with Oscar Oritz, “Otro Capitulo”).

“Being Mexican and my culture have nourished me and influenced my artistic creation and every other dimension of me in the real world,” says Becky.

On Zoom, Becky G talked about everything she needs to get through tour life, from quality time with family to her favorite pre-show drink.

Becky G-Tour invites fans back to Casa Gomez

Becky is hitting the road again with her Casa Gomez: Otro Capitulo tour. The 18-city trek, which begins Friday, is a continuation of her 2023 debut headlining tour “Mi Casa, Tu Casa” and its intimate atmosphere, which also included a neon pink house set.

“The concept was really for me… I invited people to my house. And when I think back to my childhood, there was nothing more heartwarming. We share everything: we share our food, we share our drinks, we share our home.”

“It was really important to me to continue this story with Casa Gomez and expand it to other cities for other fans who may not have been able to see us live on the last tour,” Becky added.

Becky G's trick for avoiding the “homesick” blues on tour

It wouldn't be Casa Gomez without Becky G's real family.

“As a Mexican, I’m a big family man,” says 27-year-old Becky, who is always accompanied by family members on tour. “I get homesick very quickly. I've been doing this since I was very, very young. I'm the oldest of four children and I know I'm supposed to be that grown adult who is independent and doesn't need anyone, but it gets lonely.

One relative who will be by Becky's side this fall is her cousin Freddy Quintana, aka Awsumo, who also works as a DJ and opening act for her live shows.

“We have been performing together practically since I was born. That's why I need Awsumo on tour. He is indispensable.”

Becky G's “favorite” pre-show ritual involves tequila shots

Before taking the stage, Becky G prepares a round of recording for her band and dancers, a ritual she affectionately calls her “warming up for her favorite show.”

Becky's favorite drink? Patrón Silver, whom the singer knows “like the back of my hand”. She also recently partnered with the liquor brand for their new Cristalino variant.

And when it comes to finding good food on the go, she likes to go for a classic dish of “arroz con pollo and frijoles or tacos.”

But she still has the spice of life to indulge in – with caution. “I get a little sad because I can't eat a lot of spicy food before a show, so after shows sometimes I eat sopita in a vaso (cup) with tapatío and lots of lemon, which is also.” Really delicious. Especially when you’re on a tour bus and you don’t have a lot of options,” she says.

Becky G talks to this hip-hop legend

You can remove Becky from the block, but you cannot take Becky from the block.

“I am a 90s hip-hop fanatic. It's funny, no matter where we are in the world, you can always find Awsumo running around the venue with a little speaker and you just listen. “Califonia Love” in the background,” Becky G says, singing 2Pac -Classic half way through. “We bring ourselves home wherever we go, which is very important to us.”

This breathing technique keeps Becky G's pipes “super healthy”

Any singer worth their salt knows how important breathing support is. Becky G follows the Wim Hof method when preparing for a concert.

“Basically it's like a breathing technique where at some point you hold your breath and I'm able to hold my breath for up to two minutes, which is really cool,” Becky says.

Developed by Dutch athlete and motivational speaker Wim Hof, the method is a wellness program that involves breathwork – a practice of consciously controlling your breathing patterns to address mental, physical and spiritual health issues.

“It really gets the nervous system going and expands the lungs,” says Becky. “And if you sing every night, you obviously have to make sure your lungs are super healthy.”
