Six new Area Seventy will be called to leadership at the October 2024 general conference

Six new Area Seventies of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were sustained at the church's General Conference leadership session on Thursday, October 3, 2024. These new leaders come from five countries in Africa, Central America and South America.

The newly named Area Seventy include:

  • Jean Pierre AL Haboko, 57, Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo
  • George Katembo Njogu Munene, 47, Nairobi, Kenya
  • Ramiro Ibarra Sanchez, 55, Guaymas, Mexico
  • Francisco Villanueva Rojas, 44, Santa Cruz Xoxocotlan, Mexico
  • Miguel A. Avila, 40, Lima, Peru
  • A. Enrique Texeira, 42, Lambaré, Paraguay

Area Seventies serve under the leadership of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and are “special witnesses” of Jesus Christ in the geographic areas to which they are called. They are not called to full-time service and typically serve for five years. Their duties include meeting and consulting with local church leaders to help them carry out their duties, and assisting the Twelve in “building up the church and regulating all affairs” and in “preaching and administering the gospel” within them assigned areas (Doctrine and Covenants 107). :25, 34, 38).
