Spring ISD teachers are accused of giving sleeping pills to students at Northgate Crossing Elementary School

SPRING, Texas (KTRK) — An investigation is underway after Spring ISD teachers were accused of giving elementary schools special stickers believed to be sleeping pills.

The district said two teachers at Northgate Crossing Elementary School have been removed from the classroom and placed on administrative leave while police investigate the allegations.

It's not uncommon for Lisa Luviano's daughter to come home from school with something to show for it.

On September 24th it was this sticker with a starry night design.

“She said, 'It's a sleep sticker.' I asked, 'Where did you get that?' And she said, 'My teacher gives it to me to sleep with,'” Luviano said.

Luviano claims her daughter told her that other children in her class also get it.

“The next day we went to school. We brought the evidence up there and filed a report. We said we wanted to file criminal charges if this was true,” Luviano said.

The expectation was that after nearly two weeks had passed, the school would notify the other parents. Luviano became increasingly worried.

She decided to engage them on her own by sending a mass text message.

When Najla Abdullah got it, she began questioning her four-year-old, asking him if he had ever received a “special sticker.”

“He said, ‘Yes, Mom. I'm getting a special sticker.' I said, “What does it look like?” He said, “I have it right here on my hand and it shows the storms with the clouds and the star and the moon,” Abdullah said.

Abdullah and other parents began calling the school and informing Child Protective Services.

Some told ABC13 they even took their children to the hospital for checkups.

“Every night my son comes home. He stays awake. He doesn’t sleep,” Abdullah said.

Luviano claims her daughter exhibited similar behavior.

“I just felt bad because everything she was going through made sense,” Luviano said.

A formal notification from Spring ISD came Tuesday, exactly two weeks after Luviano reported the incident.

The district provided Eyewitness News the following statement:

Spring ISD is aware of allegations that two staff members at Northgate Crossing Elementary School allegedly administered sleeping pills to students on Sept. 24. These employees were immediately removed from the classroom and placed on administrative leave pending an ongoing investigation by the Spring ISD Police Department. The district takes any allegations of educator misconduct seriously and will take all necessary actions to ensure that our students are educated in a safe and nurturing environment.

“It took them two weeks and now they’re finally saying something. All the parents are here. We want answers,” Luviano said.

ABC13's Alex Bozarjian caught parents confronting a district assistant principal outside school on Tuesday.

She later spoke with him and another administrator who called the district's delayed communication a “failure.”

Luviano and her husband want criminal charges to arise from this.

“Who is to blame for this? Who did this to our children? Because they don’t say what the side effects will be in the long term,” Luviano said.

The district has not identified the two employees involved.

Parents are now wondering how long this took and whether it was more than just special stickers.

“This teacher broke my trust. We opened our hearts to it,” Luviano said.
