Sydney Sweeney stars in biopic about boxer Christy Martin

Actress Sydney Sweeney is channeling her inner boxer for her next film.

On Tuesday, the actress revealed on Instagram a new look for her role as International Hall of Fame boxer Christy Martin in a biopic directed by David Michôd.

“Well cats out of the bag thanks to some bushes in the bushes, so here's a little sneak peek (behind the scenes) of my movie I'm currently working on,” Sweeney wrote on her Instagram caption.

Sweeney, 27, posted photos on her Instagram in loose workout clothes and a mullet hairstyle.

“Over the past few months, I have been training intensively to bring to life the story of an incredible woman – a true champion who fought battles both in and out of the ring,” Sweeney wrote. “Her journey is a testament to resilience, strength and hope, and I am honored to follow in her footsteps and share her powerful story with all of you. More on this coming soon.”

Michôd co-wrote the biopic – which is currently untitled – along with Mirrah Foulkes. The film tells the story of Martin and her rise to fame as America's most successful female boxer in the 1990s.

The cast also includes Ben Foster, who will star as Martin's husband, James, Merritt Weaver, Ethan Embry and Katy O'Brien.

Martin won the super welterweight title in 2009 before surviving an attack by her husband in 2010.

She was the first woman inducted into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame in 2016 and also the first woman inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2020. Martin finished her boxing career with a record of 49-7-3.

According to Deadline, Sweeney has some experience in martial arts and is using the film to fall in love with the sport again.

“I fought and did kickboxing from the age of 12 to 19. “I’m itching to get back in the ring, train and change my body,” Sweeney said. “Christy's story is not an easy story, it is physically and emotionally demanding, there is a lot of weight to carry. But I love challenging myself.”

“I feel compelled to tell a story about a woman who faced so much adversity and didn't let it defeat her. It’s powerful and emotional.”

The film, which is currently in production, has no timeline for when it will be released in theaters.
