Texas A&M Aggies QB Marcel Reed shares news of Conner Weigman

Texas A&M Aggies quarterback Marcel Reed pulled off some surprising heroics at home against the No. 8 LSU Tigers on Saturday.

Reed took over for quarterback Conner Weigman, who was benched midway through the third quarter with A&M trailing 17-7, and immediately made a splash by scoring an eight-yard touchdown on his first snap of the game.

From there, things went downhill for LSU — and possibly Weigman's time as the starting quarterback as well. Reed scored two more points on the next two possessions before leading Texas A&M to two shots on goal to end the game.

In the exit, Weigman was 6 of 18 passes for 64 yards, with no touchdowns and no picks.

Luckily for the Aggies, this changing of the guard is nothing new for the two quarterbacks, both of whom were a part of Texas A&M's seven-game winning streak and 7-1 record. The dynamic between the two is healthy as both have made it clear that they will do what is best for the team while remaining ready.

Reed met with the media Saturday after the win and talked about what Weigman told him after Elko decided to make the move.

“He said, ‘Let’s go. You got it,'” Reed said. “We are brothers and teammates. I stand behind him. He has my back.”

Reed finished the game just 2 of 2 passes but completed a 54-yard bomb to Noah Thomas. The country has discovered that his legs are dangerous, but he also has an arm.

He also has self-confidence. When Weigman took back the starting job after a three-game absence before facing Missouri, Reed said he wasn't hurt by Elko's decision and decided to be Weigman's biggest supporter.

“I really wasn’t disappointed,” Elko said. “The team and I have great confidence in Conner. I gave the team a chance to stay in this race by coming away with a 3-0 record, but Conner is a great quarterback and has picked up wins too. …We are both ready when our names are called.

Reed has probably earned his chance to start for the foreseeable future. But no matter which path Elko takes, the Aggies are fortunate to have two talented quarterbacks heading into Saturday's road game against the South Carolina Gamecocks.
