The beloved small town tradition returns to Caruthers

CARUTHERS, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The annual Caruthers District Fair is back in town, offering free concerts, raffles and more.

Since 1923, the fair has been a beloved tradition and an important part of the history of the town of Caruthers.

According to its website, the fair was created to promote Caruthers' rich industry. The fair enjoyed a few prosperous years before being shut down during World War II. According to reports, the exhibition grounds were used as an emergency labor camp at the time.

After the end of the war, the fair's website says, a group of men called the “Young Farmers” brought the event back to life.

The event's revival in 1946 was considered a great success and in the years since, it has become a popular tradition for visitors and those who call Caruthers home.

On opening day, the opening ceremonies and the Queen's coronation will take place on the main stage.

As the weekend progresses, the event's main stage will feature artists including:

On Saturday, local bands including the Fresno Community Band and the West Fresno Middle School Concert Band will bring the sounds of the Central Valley to the main stage.

The Caruthers District Fair is a free event September 25-28. Gates open at 10:00 a.m. and close at 11:00 p.m. The Caruthers District Fairgrounds is located at 13599 S. Raider Ave.
