The first front of fall brings much-needed relief to the Brazos Valley

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – After three straight days of record-breaking heat, the Brazos Valley is finally getting some much-deserved relief! This is all thanks to our first real cold front of the season.

A strong cold front has moved south across the United States this week and is expected to arrive in our woodlands overnight Tuesday. This will help shake up the summer weather pattern we've been stuck in for weeks.

Morning lows:

You will notice the changes as soon as you leave the house on Wednesday morning. A cool, fresh breeze and temperatures in the 50s will greet you on the way to the car, and you might even turn on the heat on the way to work. A little further north and east, people can expect temperatures around the 50s, while central and southern counties will remain in the mid and upper 50s. Thursday will be the coolest morning of the week, with widespread low temperatures in the 40s. Some freeze warnings have been issued for parts of Oklahoma, but this is not a concern for the Brazos Valley.

Friday will see another morning of temperatures in the 50s before temperatures climb back into the 60s. This weekend, every day still starts with fall feels, it will just be a little warmer than the work week.

Afternoon highs:

Let's take a look at the other side of the clock. Record highs in the upper 90s are a thing of the past (for now)! 75° is as warm as it was Wednesday afternoon in College Station. It will look very similar across the area, with temperatures in the low to mid 70s. The last time Easterwood experienced such a cool afternoon high was 185 days ago, on April 13th. Apart from that, this cooling is long overdue.

The same pattern we see with the morning lows also exists with the afternoon highs. The warm-up begins Friday and continues through the weekend, with temperatures peaking in the upper 80s.

Wind and fire hazard:

One final notable change this cold front will bring is the wind. Breezy winds will develop across our northernmost counties late Tuesday evening before pushing south overnight. Winds will be steady from the northeast at 10-20 mph, with gusts over 30 mph possible on Wednesday. Windy conditions will continue into Friday, although the direction will change as onshore winds return over the weekend. Be sure to get the Halloween decorations before you lose a pumpkin to your neighbor!

Although these winds will help push cold air into the Brazos Valley, they will also lead to increased concerns about fire danger throughout the week. As a reminder, outdoor burning is prohibited in all counties except Montgomery until further notice.
