The Jets want Zach Wilson to revive his career with the Broncos

A familiar face will return to MetLife Stadium — a place he once hoped would be the Jets' answer under center.

Zach Wilson, who joined the Broncos after three failed seasons, will be back Sunday, although it's unlikely he'll see the field as Denver's third quarterback.

The second overall pick in 2021, Wilson has struggled for most of his tenure with the Jets, including a failed attempt to lead the team last season after Aaron Rodgers went down with a torn Achilles tendon.

“I still keep an eye on him and stay in touch here and there,” Aaron Rodgers said Wednesday. “I love Zach and have always looked at him like a little brother and you know, I've enjoyed our time together on and off the field and I wish him every success. “I was really happy for him with the way he completed the pre-season , and you know, I think this will be a good year for him to refocus and hopefully he gets a chance down the road.”

The 25-year-old Wilson didn't have many memorable moments with the Jets, going 12-21 in 33 starts and throwing for 6,293 yards and 23 touchdowns.

He also had 25 interceptions and 113 sacks.

Wilson also had issues that impacted the locker room, including when he showed a lack of maturity after failing to take responsibility for a 10-3 loss to the Patriots in 2022.

Wilson entered training camp in a three-way battle for the starting role.

Although he played well during exhibition games – including 16 of 25 for 251 yards and two touchdowns, helping the Broncos to a 38-12 win over the Cardinals – he lost out to rookie Bo Nix.

Jarrett Stidham was named the No. 2 quarterback.

“I still stand here and believe he's going to have a heck of a career and get a chance and be a very successful quarterback in this league,” Robert Saleh said Thursday. “Sometimes, like I said, you get thrown into the fire and try to learn, but you don't have the patience to learn. You're expected to come straight out of the womb and speak five languages, but that takes time, especially coming from the college game, which is now so different from the NFL game in terms of what quarterbacks do Development part of it…If they just persevere and get the right opportunity, you can trust that they will figure it out.”
