The National Weather Service is issuing an advisory for most of Minnesota

“Right now the public has responded very well,” he said. “If we don’t have the problems, we don’t have to go to that higher, higher level.”

Minnesota State Parks staff speak to campers as they check in about the high fire danger and the need to exercise caution, said Sara Joy Berhow, a spokeswoman for the DNR's Parks and Trails Division.

According to the state regulation, lighting campfires at fire pits in houses, campsites or resorts is still permitted. They are prohibited for dispersed and backcountry camping, including backpack campsites at state parks in Cook, Lake, St. Louis and Koochiching counties.

“We try to communicate in a variety of ways to inform people about safety issues and other warnings before they arrive at a park, but there will be some people who arrive at a park without hearing about the red flag warning have,” said Berhow.

The drought has pushed most of the state into drought for the first time in months, with nearly a third of Minnesota experiencing severe drought, according to an update from the U.S. Drought Monitor on Thursday.

Most recently, heavy spring rains caused devastating flooding that threatened dams, overflowing manure lagoons and overwhelmed wastewater treatment systems throughout southern Minnesota.
