The next named storm on the list is Nadine. What forecasters are watching.

With more than seven weeks left in the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, there's a good chance that catastrophic Hurricane Milton won't be the last storm to hit the U.S. this year.

In fact, meteorologists continue to monitor several other systems across the Atlantic basin. A storm east of Florida that briefly looked like it might have developed into Tropical Storm Nadine fizzled out Wednesday before becoming a cyclone.

The storm parade comes against the backdrop of what is now officially described as an above-average hurricane season Colorado State University meteorologist Phil Klotzbach.

The would-be Nadine posed no threat to the landing

A developing system off the east coast of Florida that moved away from land never developed into Tropical Storm Nadine.

“As the system moves east-northeast today and passes south of Bermuda, environmental conditions are no longer conducive to further development,” the National Hurricane Center said early Thursday morning.

There were 13 named storms in the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season. A typical season – which runs from June 1 to November 30 – has 14 storms.

Hurricane Leslie is spinning in the open Atlantic

Hurricane Leslie, the seventh hurricane of the season, continues to move far from land on Thursday after strengthening since Wednesday. It is forecast to circle the central Atlantic in the next few days.

“Maximum sustained winds are around 105 mph, with stronger gusts,” the hurricane center said. “Leslie is forecast to become weaker over the next few days.”

Tropical wave off the coast of Africa

Meteorologists say a tropical wave moved off the west coast of Africa in the Far Eastern tropical Atlantic, producing disorderly showers and thunderstorms on Thursday.

“Environmental conditions appear to be marginal for limited development of this system as it moves west or west-northwest across the eastern tropical Atlantic and Cape Verde Islands on Friday,” the hurricane center said.

Above-average hurricane season in the Atlantic

According to one measurement, the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season was more active than usual:

“The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season has now generated 127 ACE (Accumulated Cyclone Energy), officially meeting the NOAA definition of an above-average season,” Klotzbach said on X-Wednesday.

ACE is a metric that includes storm frequency, intensity and duration.
